Getting online with Amithlon
« on: November 29, 2002, 07:57:51 AM »
Hi there.

I'm using Amithlon and I want to get online. But I have  no experience in Amiga Networking so far.

I have a network set up at home. I have a Linux server connecting to the internet (DSL) and routing
the net-connection to the three other desktops. On one of them I'd like to set up Amithlon to
be able to connect to the internet. I have no problems getting online with either Windows or Linux.

From Windows my network card-settings look like this:

3Com Etherlink XL 10/100 PCI NIC (3C905-TX)
Location 5 (PCI bus0, device 12, function 0)
IO-Range C400-C43F
IRQ 11

I know Amithlon only supports NE2000 network cards, which should include most cards as the
documentation shows. But I'm not sure if my card is NE2000 compatible.

I did try to install the genesis demo and then the used the powerne2k.device. I tried all possible
unit-numbers, but the install won't continue. At Unit 0 it tells me that it cannot reset card
(Incompatible card?). I'm not sure if this is because it's the wrong unit-number or if it is
because the 3COM Etherlink XL is simply not supported.

If the 3COM card is unsupported are there any proper device-drivers available for it?
Am I doing something else wrong?

Any help is most welcome.

Regards,

Ohno

I haven't yet found (or heard of) a 3COm card that'll work under Amithlon. Your best bet would be to haunt the local computer fairs and check every s/h NIC for a RTL8029 chip. They're usually plentiful and rather cheap. (They are only a 10mbit card afterall)
Windows and Linux will co-exist with two NICs and Amithlon will ignore the 3Com unit.
Cache Ya,
Craig.

Busy playing with my Trainz and loving it!

Ah ok.. that would be it then :)

Thanx.

I'll get myself another network card then... I must have a couple of old ones laying around.. I just like the 3COM's very much, but it won't hurt putting another network card in there I guess (apart from it taking up another PCI-slot).

Cheers,
