« on: September 18, 2008, 09:34:04 AM »
Hi all,
please don't flame me if this is a stupid question.
i have an A1200 with 3.1 roms in it and i own OS3.9, now i've heard of 3.9 roms, what are these, where can i get them from? and as i own the 3.1 roms and the 3.9OS am i legally entitled to use them? (if i can get them that is)
 thanks in advance, JuvUK

3.9 roms are simply 3.1 roms updated with boing bag 2 rom update modules. You can boot into 3.9 straight without reboot caused by romupdate with these.
AFAIK there isn't any legal source to obtain them. You have to burn one yourself or ask someone who can do it.

There used to be a guy here who made those, but he got flamed so much that he refused to sell any in the end :madashell:  I wanted one so bad ... I think he would take your 3.1 rom and ruin it and give you a 3.9 rom back ?

Some people objected to me doing it in the first place as they felt it violated the EULA of OS3.9. Others objected to me requiring them to send me a 3.1 ROM chip to be destroyed to prove they own it and to prevent them from having a (pirate) duplicate. In the end I got so fed up with people whingeing about it that I decided I couldn't be bothered to offer the burning service.

See for yourself:
My Kickstart 3.9 EPROM thread

That thread contains the instructions on how to do it, and on about page 2 or 3 the arguing starts

Why not ask them? ;-)

Actually, it's really not difficult to do this yourself. The instructions in the thread I linked to above are quite comprehensive, and although there are a number of steps, none of them are very complicated. I still have the Willem programmer I used to burn the chips. If you're interested in buying it from me, feel free to send me a PM. But make sure you're happy with the instructions first ;-)

Is it not a nightmare to get those programmers to work?

They are quite complicated, but the manual is very good. There are lots of jumpers, you have to use the correct chip adapter, and you have to tell the software what time of device, adapter and chip you are using. But this is all covered in the manuals.

there is also the OS issue I believe ... moto did you manage to get willem working with anything above XP sp2 ? Something with the XP messes parallel port continously so I couldn't get it working. There is an alternate XP sp1 install on my computer just for willem use.

there is a small registry hack to stop XP trying to detect plug&pray parallel printer, I can send it to you.

I have also used Willem and it mostly works fine.
Better sorry than worry.

57 USD from sivava 16 bit eprom adapter included (shipping not included, from Thailand AFAIK.)

I think willem is a good investment if you have some retro stuff lying around. You can also burn roms for your amiga HDD peripherals like a590, a2091, GVP SCSI boards etc, also c64 roms like jiffydos, drive roms and some cartridge roms (games smaller than 8k) are possible.
