Needed: MiamiDX prefs file for Ethernet LAN...
« on: August 26, 2003, 04:41:24 PM »
Hmm... How hard can it be to put my two A1200's in into an ethernet LAN? -Hard enough!

I can't seem to get the damn things to ping eachother... So I would be glad if one or more of you could send me a prefs file where you've succesfuly got two ethernet cards/machines to ping...

Just send me an e-mail...

I've read 4 tutorials and Miami's own manual to try to solve this problem... But there's something I'm missing...

HELP!

-EDIT-
click on my profile to get my e-mail :-)

Try this site:

www.amigasamba.org

I used the same config and it worked. The second thing you have to do is use each Amiga a different IP-adres.
e.g.:
Amiga 1: 192.168.0.1
Amiga 2: 192.168.0.2

@amiga1260
Thanks but the only problem is I've already read that tutorial... Still not working...

I actually mean a settings file... more or less the same as a prefs file :-)

This should give me some sight of what I've done wrong... I don't care if it's not the same hardware used...

I cannot send you a settings file because that contains passwords that I use for the services on my A4000T.  However, I do have some questions and suggestions:

How are you connecting the machines together?  Are you going through a hub, router, or switch?  Or are you connecting the Amigas directly to one another?  (If thru hub/switch/router, you need standard CAT5 cable.  If direct connection, you need a "crossover" CAT5 cable.)  What kind of cabling are you using?  Are you sure the cables are good??

Here's an example of the settings for a direct connection setup (this also applies if you're using a hub with standard cables):
A1200 #1 - IP = 192.168.1.1, SubNet = 255.255.255.0, Gateway = 192.168.1.2

A1200 #2 - IP = 192.168.1.2, SubNet = 255.255.255.0, Gateway = 192.168.1.1

--------------------------------------------------
Example setup with a network switch in between the two A1200's ... the same goes for a router (if you're using a hub, then use the direct connection config above, but you will need standard cables, not crossover):

Switch LAN IP = 192.168.1.1

A1200 #1 - IP = 192.168.1.2, SubNet = 255.255.255.0, Gateway = 192.168.1.1 (switch LAN IP)

A1200 #2 - IP = 192.168.1.3, SubNet = 255.255.255.0, Gateway = 192.168.1.1 (switch LAN IP)

Hi there... Yeah, sorry for the lack of info... Ehm, let me see...

I'm connecting them directly to one another...
The cable is brand new and I used it at at a netparty some month ago, and it haven't been touched since (Until now)...

So you say I should use a "crossover" cable for this solution? -My guess is, if I used it at the netparty, were it was connected to some device (switch or router) it must be a standard cable...
So this could be no.1 error...

I've already given the two amiga's two different IP's: #1= 192.168.1.1 and #2= 192.168.1.2 the SubNet(Netmask) is= 255.255.255.0, but my gateway's is different (I've read that if none of the amigas is connected to the internet only #2 should have #1's IP as gateway and #1 should have none (priority=0); This could be wrong?)...

I'm also confused about the settings in MiamiDX:
What should I write in the database section (on both machines) in the following options?:
Hosts
Users
Groups

If I've understood this right, these are the only things I need to configure in the database section?
In the TCP/IP section I've sat the atributes for each specific amiga: different hostnames, real names and user names...

In short:
will you say it's either the cable or the gateways?

Again thanks...

Yup, without a hub you must use a crossover cable, (it`s ethernets version of a null modem cable)

As for the gateway address, you only need to fill that in if one of the computers on your network is connected to another network, acting as a gateway between the two...and it should always be the same within a subnet.
eg. If you had 3 machines networked and one also had access to the internet, then you`d enter that machines IP address as the gateway address for the other 2.

The Hosts database is simply a list of machine names and their network IP address.
Something like:
 A1200   192.168.1.1
 A2000   192.168.1.2
 Linux     192.168.1.3
It`s like a cheap and easy internal DNS for your network.

The users list is for users(people or programs) and their respective rights and home directories, and what "group" they belong to..not used that much on the Amiga.
