WHDload, does it make old games work on new Amigas ?
« on: September 15, 2008, 10:17:35 PM »
Hello all.
I have an A4000/030, and I hope will be getting an A3640 card soon and maybe a Cyberstorm MKIII 060. The question is this...Does WHDLoad make older games such as Walker, New Zealand Story, Falcon..well, all the OCS games and ECS games really, work on expanded Amigas such as A4000 with either 030, 040 or 060 CPU's in them.
I really want the best of both worlds. Ability to run nice screen modes using a Cybervision (with scan doubler) and heavy games like Alien Breed 3D II on a big CPU and old games on it as well. What is the best thing to do?? Stick with an 040 or opt for big memory with fast CPU (060/126MB)??
I will be using either OS3.5 or 3.9 on a 4gb HD

I'd say the 040 is probably worst off for compatibility, even with WHDLoad.

In my experience, most things work with an 060 using WHDLoad.

So I guess the answer to your Question is, Yes, WHDLoad does make old games work on Newer Amigas  :-D

Also you can install many Scenedemos too.

Hi Robert, thanks for your reply. So is WHDLoad an emulator of sorts?

BTW, is your signature right?. Your A4000D has an 050?

WHDLoad is not an emulator.

With this terrific tool you can install EVERY possible Amiga game (and even demos) on your hard disk, even if the disks are NDOS (No DOS). So no more disk swapping and of course every different game install has some benefits, for example on some games you can quit back to workbench (but in normal there is no such a key option), or on some adventure games you can save directly to the hard disk (but in normal circumstances you have to create a save game disk) etc.

Just visit the website www.whdload.de for more information. It worth every euro, believe me.

I used this on my A1200 with a Blizzard MK4 030/50MHz with no problems at all and now I have a Blizzard 060/50MHz and is working like a charm.

There are also tooltypes that you can type in the icon info to suit your needs.

Just read the documentation on the site and you will love this tool. :-D

Phantom has said it all really.

WHDLoad is in *NO* way an emulator, More as such a "Patch" of sorts, to allow games that usually required booting from a disk (No Workbench loaded), to load from Hard Drive.

The games had Copy Protection custom format's on the disk and other such stuff, like manual protection that needed the Original Manual's.

What happens, is that WHDLOAD takes the ORIGINAL disk, saves off an "Image" of the disk to the HDD, and by the use of a Slave file (or Patch file), Fixes bugs, removes protections, and updates the game's code to make it more compatible with more modern CPU's like 060/PPC.  Some games instead of having to load each level from disk again, are pre-loaded in to ram to speed up response times.  Also, WhdLoad usually offers an "Escape" function to quit back to Workbench, instead of needing a Reset to Quit.

Whdload runs like a dream on my 060 (Cyberstorm MK II)

WHDLoad is one of the VERY FEW software's still under active development for Amiga's, it has its own VALUED niche in the Amiga.  I had no hesitation in Registering WHDLoad, ensuring that Wepl (Bert) has more motivation to continue its development. (Some games require registration to run).

Go to the site and look up your favorite game, to see what enhancements it offers.
