Amiga Emulation-What do you prefer
« on: September 08, 2008, 09:16:55 PM »
Hello all.  A while back I sold all of my amiga hardware anticipating AOS 4.0 and new hardware.  Obviously that hasn't quite happened yet.  So I'm thinking about going the emulation route.  I no longer have any games so that isn't a priority.  Mostly doing the general stuff (web surfing, getting email, word processing) and just having fun remembering how fun it was to use the Amiga OS.  I'm aware of Amiga Forever, AmiKit, and UAE.  What do you prefer and why?  Please give me specifics as to why you prefer what you do.  Thank you for your time.

I'll put in a second vote for AmiKit.  As for why, it just works and works very well.  It has a ton of nice looking and functional extras that come in very handy from time to time.

Although I prefer DiskMaster2 over DirectoryOpus as my file utility of choice, I have yet to disable or remove DirOpus from my AmiKit install.

One of the things I like most about AmiKit is that it has an automatic update feature (so does AmigaForever) so when newer versions of the programs within AmiKit are available, the author of AmiKit makes the upgrades available and automatically installed for us.

I have enough Amiga projects to keep me busy 24/7 for many years to come without needing to find and manually install these upgraded files in my free time, so I really appreciate this part of AmiKit & AmigaForever.

I also stay up late playing Sudoku (too often), which is provided free with several other games.

I feel like the the author of AmiKit is working for me.  He is out there searching for all the latest and greatest upgrades and extras for the emulated Amiga so I don't have to.

For games, AmigaForever 2008 has a nice front-end player for ease of use that appears to be very good at what it does.

I strongly recommend both programs to anyone and everyone.

Edit:  I think I must be rambling today, now that the Morphine is kicking in to dull the pain in my back a little. That and ice have enabled me to get up and move around again.  So, please forgive the length of my messages today, I think I should not type under the influence.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

I agree Amikit is very very nicely designed and thought through. If only it was placed directly on the hardware it would be the logical next step design vise.

Winuae is great for a quick Ami fix when spending to much time on PC.

EDIT The only thing the so called rambling possibly have revealed is a big heart that beats for Amiga and the community. :-)

Amithlon.

it's the best and powerfull environment Amiga among any other amiga 68k emulator.

It's faster than winuae and winuae is faster than any other UAE version :)

Amithlon is more a real Amiga than UAE or AROS so a nostalgic user can find in amithlon his lost and loved Amiga :D

Recently I've been experimenting with AmiKit, and it's a good compilation of useful software. AmiKit is good for those who want something already setup and ready. Be aware that AmiKit does not have the typical System and Work partitions but rather has a single AmiKit partition. I simply created a drawer called Work, so it's not a big deal for me. I also have the Amithlon CD, and adding the applications from it to AmiKit was simple, and they work great.

I've used an older version of AmigaForever (v4), and it works well. The newest AmigaForever 2008 is on my To Buy list as I am interested in testing the new Linux loader they've developed.

Now if only money could be donated or allocated for A-Web or IBrowse to be updated, then  that would be great.
AmigaOS enthusiast since 1993.

@ Seiya

So how does amitthlon run non system friendly software.  Like games, demos and hardware banging apps ?  Does it use UAE ?  Im guessing it doesnt use Winuae but a linux version which must suck ccompared to Winuaw.

@ Others

Amikit is great, but dont forget it actually needs an emulator to run on  :-D

Emulation is the (only) way to go. It's the future of computing.
No more OS wars; multiple OSes can live happily together on the same hardware, sharing data as they need to!

You have to use Amiga UAE for that since Amithlon lacks customchip emulation.

E-UAE 68k would be a more sensible solution, it's more recent and updated:
