Mediator V Indivision
« on: September 02, 2008, 07:09:56 PM »
I am wondering if I should get the new IV scan/FF for the Amiga or get a Mediator and Voodoo card. So I have a cpl questions.

1) Will the Mediator/Voodoo alow me to play normal games from floppy/Hdd or will I have to use the native RGB port and Miggy Monitor?

2) Will the Indivision fit in with a mediator board or is it one or the other?

3)Is there a passthrough for the miggy gfx to the medatior/Voodoo?

Thanks. Thinking this as they seem to be both around the same prices.

Cheers

1) You will still have the need for a monitor connected to the RGB port.

2) Dunno

3) No.

@doctorq if the IV SD/FF has a 15pin VGA output and carries all the native amiga screenmodes, why would a monitor need to be connected to the 23pin amiga RGB port?

Is there space available to put Indivison in one Amiga with Mediator and FastAta?

I believe Indivision AGA has been designed in a way that can be fitted on an A1200 with FastATA. Mediator is irelevant as it occupies a different place on the motherboard so, yes, you may have FastATA, Indivision AGA and Mediator with whatever PCI cards you put on working together just fine.

Thats good news! People could get away with having one VGA monitor and having a switcher box to switch between Grtfx Card output and AGA output. There are switcher boxes like that arent there??

Unless there are any monitors out their with 2 VGA ports???

I think I might have to look at getting Indivision  :-)

You can get away with this using an LCD screen that has both a DVI and VGA input.  Just get a VGA-to-DVI converter...

But in this monitor you should have "option" to change manually "input" so you can see VGA vs. DVI. Mine have two inputs and I can't connect both at the time :(.

No, don't thinks so :(
If you have a look at the pics you'll see that it prob won't fit (would love to be wrong though).

Indivision + mediator = ok
fastATA + mediator = ok
Indivision + fastATA + mediator = not ok

Also if you've got a Mediator with RTG I think you'd only need to use the 'standard' output (eg OCS/ECS/AGA) is if you wanted to run the software for that kind of ouput.  Workbench would just use the RTG as would any RTG games.

That's right isn't it :-?

@NovaCoder

If you check this photo http://www.siliconsonic.de/news/Indivision_AGA_mounted.jpg you can see that Indivision AGA occupies a different chip than FastATA (in the picture it's, I think, the IDE express chip, which occupies the same chip as Fast ATA - Gayle isn't it?). I also think that Jens has specifically stated that his scandoubler can be fitted along with a fastata and similar solutions. You will be needing ROM risers though.

You're correct about the output, games that bang the hardware directly (most games, that is) will output to the scandoubler, RTG will output to Voodoo. So, as suggested above, you may have a monitor switch or a monitor that accepts 2 inputs at the same time with a built-in switch.

Well, that wasn't the question; the question was if the OP got a Mediator with Voodoo, if he still needed to use his Amiga monitor connected to RGB port to play games from HDD. He does. The scandoubler just substitutes the RGB port, enabling the use of modern monitors.

The initial problem for the OP was to get one or the other, not both.

Bottom line, the Mediator/Voodoo combo doesn't take over the screen output from the computer as it does in the PC world.

According to Elbox once you raise the height of the Fast ATA with Rom sockets you can no longer install the Mediator.

I've been looking at the pictures of the Indivision aga and the FastATA1200, i concluded that it wont fit. they occupy the same space, right over the RAM and something around there, dont remember the details now.

Ah yes, rom riser. that would work. I mailed him about this but got no reply, is there such a think as a rom riser tho?

I was prepared myself to just get the idefix...
