Amiga 500 Motherboard Revision 6 RAM upgrade ?
« on: August 24, 2003, 09:51:22 AM »
Hi folks,

My friend gave me an Amiga 500 system.  My intent for this computer was to remove all of the parts from it that could be used on my more professional Amiga 2000HD.  When I opened up this Amiga 500 (on a anti-static work station) I noticed that the motherboard was a revision 6.  It only has the 4 - 256k X 4 DRAMs for a total of 512k of Chip RAM.  There are also places on the board to solder on 4 - 20 pin IC sockets and then plug in 4 more 256k X 4 DRAMs for a total of 1 meg of Chip RAM.  Does anybody know if all I need is to add the additional memory or do I also need to solder other parts (.33 uF filtering caps, Resister packs, jumpers, etc.)?  Will this Rev. 6 motherboard take the Super-Denise and Kickstart 3.1?  It already has the 1 meg Agnes.   ;-)

That's right!  I am the DoomMaster of the PC version of DOOM and DOOM 2.  Doom is now rated by all video game experts (including myself) as the best video game of all time!  There have been more clones of Doom made then any other video game.  Think about it, where do you think games like Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior, Blood, Quake 2, Voyager Elite Force, etc. came from?  ALL of these kinds of games are Doom clones.  Please note:  I invented the 3D idea for video games but my idea was originally meant for Role Playing Adventure games not First Person Shooters.  My famous HGC series of maps for Doom 2, Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior and Blood are well known on the Kali Game Server   :-D

Back when the A500 was more mainstream, there were many ram modifications (check Aminet).  One of the coolest, which I did on the only computer I had at the time, was to swap in the 2Meg Agnes and put 2 Megs of ram directly on the motherboard.  The memory in the trap door was disabled and useful only for the clock.  If I recall, this mod was great but not compatible with the AdSpeed accelerator.  I still have this machine.

Yes, you can install Super-Denise and Kickstart 3.1 (the A500 version).  I haven't done so yet, but I think some people have installed OS3.9 on A500s.  I think substituting the older style icons is all thats required.

Actually... To be honest, isn´t Doom just a clone of Wolfenstein???  :-?

@DoomMaster

The 'easy' way to activate the 1 meg agnus
involves installing a 1/2 meg "fastram" card
in the bottom expansion port. After a few
minor motherboard mods, the "fastram" card
will be addressed as "chipram" (check aminet
for the full instructions). I did this myself
years ago...it's easy.

The better way would be to install the ram
directly on the mobo, but I have no experience
of this...then you would have the expansion
port free for fastram/etc.

-edit-

Check here for the Rev. 6 agnus mod:
