Not in the last ~12 years. Via bought out Cyrix iirc, Cyrix back in the day were always terribly underwhelming. Pathetic to be more precise. I doubt things have changed much.

Huh, used to?
My A1000 box says "Personal Computer", so it's a PC, as is my Macintosh. I refer to Dell, etc, machines as IBM clones, which is the proper term.

I was about to buy a via ITX based computer to use in my carputer project.

Yes, I do actually.  Too often people try and compare it to top of the line Core2 and Athlons, and yes, those will blow the C7 out of the water... until their batteries run out.  The C7 uses a fraction of the power that the others do, even Intel's Atom doesn't hold up, despite a similar performance curve.  For an ultra portable, it is ideal.

Yup, so pathetic that Intel had to license the VIA FPU to include in their high-end CPU's due to performance issues on Intel's CPU's.... but they don't like to mention that little factoid.

I dunno.  How bad would it be to have a little spare cash, about US$600, to plop on modern hardware instead of old hardware of questionable reliability, then run Amiga Forever or AmiThlon, or AROS, or what have you, if that's what you want to do?

I can see loading this thing up with all sorts of emulators: Amiga, C64/128/etc (VICE,) TI-99/4A, Atari ST, Genesis, and so on.  The specs would seem to easily support that.

Yeah, if you can get away from the religion aspect and try not equate an old logo with the word blasphemy...

then I don't see how this is different from the GP32X thing people think is cool.  Sure this is "more" powerful, enough to GASP! run Windows (probably not well), but if the GP32X had Windows ported to it then would that turn into a POS all of a sudden?

This could be thought of as just another GP32X, but more powerful, bigger screen, with a cool retro logo on it.

Does anyone know when and where these will be available?  Is there
a Commodore website..if so post link.

Thanks

Edit --- I found the website..kind of vague at least to me.  The website mentioned no laptop and list of products was unclear to me.   How ironic
would it be if the new Commodore..rescued the Amiga brand hehehe..

I'm afriad that no one calls x86 PC's "IBM Clones" anymore.
Thats a term from the 80's when IBM built alot of the x86 hardware.

Everyone just calls them PC's these days. I think the funny part is that most unsavvy computer people call the main box that houses their computer the "CPU"

Thats what everyone calls them where I do IT work. They always say "Do you want me to bring in my CPU so you can take a look at it.

I want one, but I'll just have to install Gentoo Linux on it...

From what I understand the C7 is very similar performance wise to the Atom, both use in order execution, low power and similar speeds.

I think the big downside perhaps might be the VIA Chrome based graphics chip, but really, in this sort of platform, I can't see that being much of an issue - you're not going to be playing Quake 4 or HD content on any netbook.

That said, I do prefer VIA's vinyl sound chips over Intels stuff.

Yes, I'd consider buying one if I had the cash to spare, but I don't. I guess I'll have to stick with my first gen Eeepc 2G surf

That's what I was getting at. In any case, I call them IBM's still precisely because I know that even the C=64 was a "personal computer" and said so right on the case. Except, these days, if I say "IBM", people say stuff like "No, it's a Dell." So, I just go with "Windows box" since that's the most accurate terminology that people aren't confused by.

Or with something like AROS, this could be a neat little AmigaOS laptop computer, versus the hand-held PSP-type machine of the GP32X.  I can see the appeal.

Thats to differentiate the "box" from the monitor. I know many people who think when you say the "computer", you mean the monitor. Tell em to turn the computer on and they hit the monitor power button and tell you the computer is "black".  you then have to tell them to push the cpu power button as well...

Also amuses me when people refer to the computer as the "hard drive"

"Crap" is a bit harsh - but yes, they're certainly not up there with the current Intel or AMD offerings. Great for low-power and/or fanless stuff though. I recently got a Gigabyte Mini-ITX motherboard with 1GHz fanless C7 and a 4Gb CF to use as a boot drive, with the aim of building a silent machine, perhaps for AROS...

While yes, it is performance wise similar to the Atom, consider that the Atom is a brand new CPU, while the C7 is having a replacement coming out soon.  But you are right that the Chrome is the weak spot, but made up for with Vinyl IMHO.  For a netbook, I'd sooner have better sound than video.

Incidentally, the VIA solution can handle HD video.  I've done it.

if the price is not so bad as I'm seeing ($600+, ouch!) I might consider this over the Dell or Sylvania netbooks I've been eyeing.

Looks like a toy from the 80's:

Commodore 10" netbook

I kinda like the retro look of it. I saw the same article about 2hours after getting an Acer Aspire One 150, If I had seen this first then I would have probably bought it.

Saying that tho, I think I would feel cheated about having a Commodore branded x86 laptop. Commodore to me means C64 and Amiga. The Commodore logo would just be a novelty.
