techincal advice
« on: August 30, 2008, 09:16:46 AM »
first of all,hi all as im new here.nice to see an active community for the amiga.

i have a couple of issues in setting up my a1200.its got a 6gb hd (3 x 2gb ptn).ide fix express to which said drive is attached along with an ide cdrw which i had to mod in an external case and link with an ide cable.the bit that comes out of the amiga is female so i can remove the drive, its quite cool and a bit cheaper than buying a pcmcia squirrel and scsi drive!.its also got a 4mb (soon to be 8) add on in the trapdoor with a rtc,but no fpu.wouldnt mind an 040 or similar but just cant afford it.
updated 3.1 roms and wb 3.1.i do have 3.5 and 3.9 but my hard drive went into 1gb partitions and i dont know how to set them up after installing 3.5 so i just left 3.1 on.
anyway, here are my two questions which i desperately need a cure to cos its driving me nuts.hope someone can help....

1. how do you alter the boot sequence by altering the script?.i have something that starts on boot up but a file is missing so it wont pass it and just halts.

2.is there anything out there with a gui for a novice, which can convert dms so i can transfer to adf so i can use the software on a floppy.

many thanks

john

1)
Select boot with no startup-sequence in the boot-menu, that should drop you to a cli
2)
Dms's are compressed disk images, they can be written directly to a disk using xdms ( seems to be the latest version ) DMS2HD as the name suggests should write a dms to hd, i've never tried it however.

This might work if dms hasnt changed all too much since 92.

You might also want to get snoopdos and stuff that in your startup-sequence file, that will help figure out what app is crashing

1) Turn on Amiga, and hold down both left and right mouse buttons until you see the boot screen

2) Select the 'boot with no startup-sequence' option  at the bottom of the screen

3) the CLI will appear after a few seconds

try to see if the "ed" command works when you enter the cli. You can then type "ed s/startup-sequence". I just type "ed x" and open the file in the mouse menu on the top of the screen.
