Must have Software for new 1200 Setup?
« on: August 20, 2008, 05:54:28 PM »
Hi, I plan on setting up a 2.5" hd for my newly working amiga 1200 using Winuae.  Its a 6gb hd so space should not be an issue.  The 1200 has 3.0 roms on the motherboard.

Should I use os 3.0 or 3.1?  Also, what is some "Must Have" software, games, etc.  It will all be easy to transfer over using winuae to set it all up, then slap it in the real amiga to take home!  Let me know guys/gals (Are there amiga gals? ;)).

Os 3.0 if you have 3.0 roms and 3.1 if you have 3.1 roms..

For games i recomend to check out Whdload, play all gamesd from harddrive and quit back to workbench etc..

WB3.1 works fine with KS3.0.

I run WB3.0 on KS3.1...

I got the ROMs from a 2nd Amiga I bought for some other hardware it had installed.

Never got round to getting WB3.1, OS3.5 or OS3.9, but my interest in the Amiga has been rekindled somewhat by the new Indivision SD/FF so I'll probably pick up OS3.9 from ebay sometime soon.

"Must Have" software

There's a very long list I'm sure, but some I couldn't do without are DirectoryOpus4 (great file management prog), WHDLoad (games installers from www.whdload.de which can make even very old games work on your A1200) ToolsDaemon (for launching any game or util from menus at the top of your Workbench screen) and ADF-Blitzer (for creating and unpacking ADF files) :-)

I'll second DOpus4, although I only really go into it now and again, it's useful - especially with LhaDir.

ToolsDaemon - yes, and also MagicMenus so you don't have to go to the top of the screen. ;-)

MCP - for all those little things that you just can't live without (and that otherwise would have to be in some separate prog), and FBlit to help keep things Faaast. ;-) (again)

NewIconsV4 with DefIcons - for those who don't have KS3.1 but still like pretty interfaces.

There's still lots more.....

Hi,

You may have issues with 6gb depending on what file system you install (4gb is the normal limit).  I'd go for 3.1 ROMS myself and install OS 3.9 along with the patches.

Have you got yourself a memory expansion card yet?  You really need one if you want to do anything useful with it.

And pre-order an Indivision while your at it :)

WHDLOAD is the most important software to install along with loads of game packs  :-D
Life begins at 100 MIPS!

Icons: Magic workbench is my preference over newicons because they take less memory (8 color screens are fine), very fast to draw, and give a very consistent look.
Magic Menu-pop-up menu anywhere on screen
Toolsdaemon-adds extra menues
Toolmanager-adds dock
DirectoryOpus4-best file manager bar none.
Whdload-worth registering, lets you install games to hard drive.
ADFBlitzer-create and unpack ADF's
Games-whatever you like

I highly recommend starting with a pre-built install from ClassicWB http://classicwb.abime.net/ .

I wish I had known about these setups when I was first putting my 1200 together.   It's much easier than collecting and installing everything yourself.

I know this is an old thread, but someone said "Use WB3.0 if you have 3.0 roms and WB3.1 if you have 3.1 roms" and someone else says "WB3.1 works fine on 3.0 roms".

I have 3.0 roms, and currently use WB3.1, so I know that it works fine, but I was wondering what the benefits are to using matching workbench/rom versions, or whether to carry on using wb3.1.

Also, do you need any drivers to run accelerator cards?

I think my plan is to reinstall but using classicwb when my extra ram arrives, but was wondering whether to base it off wb3.0 or 3.1.

When I was using my A1200. I used 3.0 for a while and I used to get random guru's.  When i went to 3.1, all of that stopped.  The monitor drivers are also different and 3.1 just felt a bit quicker.  i think it was an OS update that was mainly under the hood, so that much of the OS code was improved in 3.1.  I can't remember exactly how now..If you can afford it get 3.1 and stay with a 4gig flash card and get some fast ram: it will boot damned quickly.

If you're going to run 3.0 ROMs, why not just run OS 1.1?
The only reason to run 3.1 ROMs and newer OS is to benefit from all of the new (better) routines. If you're going to run old stuff, go all the way...

Hmmm I would definitely have to say Classic WB just for the ease of installing everything that you would really need.  I installed it on my A1200 and haven`t looked back since.

Now that's just silly.

OS 3.0 can do a whole lot of things that OS 2.0 couldn't, and OS 2.0 can do alot of things 1.x couldn't.

Sure, the newer the OS, the newer the software you can run, but saying 3.0 ROMS are useless doesn't make sense.

That said, I'd like to upgrade my 4000's ROMs from 3.0 to 3.1.
