Install 3.1 ROMs or stick with Kickswitcher?
« on: August 16, 2008, 10:34:51 PM »
Hi all

I have some new 3.1 ROMs for my A3000. But the current setup is 2.0 with 1.3 available on boot. With help from alexh I have replaced the 2.0 on the hard drive with a 3.1 file which means I can boot to 3.1 or 1.3.

By installing my new 3.1 ROMs i'm guessing I will lose the 1.3 boot facility. But I would gain 512k fast RAM back, because it isn't loading the 3.1 ROM into memory (I have a SIMMfolie on order so the loss of 512k will be nothing when I get my 16mb upgrade).

Which would you do?

Put the real KS3.1 in!

1)You'll be able to switch to the SFS filesystem on the boot drive which will give a large performance increase over FFS.

2)You'll be able to boot from IDE (Buddha) if you like.

3)You'll be able to install an accelerator!

4)You'll never want KS1.3 again. You've got a hard drive and WHDload.

And if you need a KS1.3/WB1.3 limited environment, you can...

5) Install a WHDLOAD session of Workbench 1.3 running under Kickstart 1.3 (works nicely)

If you can give SFS some time I think you'll really notice the difference.

Also once you've installed OS3.9 (boing bag 1 & 2 + patches) you should look into some of the available OS speed ups.

Changed the ROMs over. Formatted my CF and installed 3.1. Removed the 100mb Quantum SCSI hard drive and now the peace and quiet is golden!

Now looking at some 3.9 CD's on ebay.

Did you use SFS as I recommended?
