Disk defragmenter for 68k ?

ReOrg 3.11 seems to have certain problems with OS3.9 and large partitions.

What is the best/working solution for defragmenting volumes under os3.9 ?

AFAIK, if you put SFS filesystem on your setup, you'll get a self-defragmenting system which can be additionaly forced to defragment.

SFS doesn't self defragment.

In fact SFS is probably the worst filesystem on amiga regarding fragmentation (if multiple apps are writing to files simultanously, each will get a block allocated in sequence, creating the worst case scenario fragmentation).

I used to use a program called "BAD", and never had any problems with it, but I have read that it could create some really bad results for some people.  I still have the original box and floppy, but it may be corrupted by now.

I also have some disk tools from Upper Design, but just reading the package it came in I see that it is for file recovery, not defragmentation.

I would think that there would be many PD defrag programs available.

What kind of problems are you having with ReOrg3.11?

ReOrg doesn't handle partitions beyond the 4GB area.

Hi,

Some years ago I bought PFS3 but was never able to get it to work right. From what I heard at the time it was very good.

It was supposed to clean up after itself so to speak.

QuarterbackTools has a working disk-optimizer, however it was even back then and now it seems to run partitions over 1GB forever.  Also it has problems allready when it was released with 040`s copyback-mode; my 4000/040`s hd got scrambled few times in 1994 when I tested it.


I`m using FFS DC for my paritions; hd is 4GB (~3.7GB).

 Yeah, but it have the best defragmentation program I see, hands down. And is working on partitions over the 4Gb barrier.

IIRC, there is a small defrag util on aminet for PFS. it simply copies file or something.

Seriously, I read somewhere about that "defrag in background". Is it really a fake or it's just a bugger on high-end setups with concurrent write ops ?

I thought SFS would be safe bet for my A500/A530 1Gb CF setup, since FFS validation takes too much time.
Any suggestion?

Take an eye to the fragmentation from time to time with the tool in the archive SFSCheck

SFSCheck partitioname: FRAGLIST

If you'l see files with a lot of fragments, run SFSDefrag

Use 512 Bytes blocksize and as much dosbuffers as you can (accordingly with your amount of fastram installed ... minimum 400 anyway)

There another tool (setcache) to fine tuning the read ahead cache (for better performances)
