Loading pictures to the FastRAM instead of Voodoo memory?
« on: August 14, 2008, 06:04:20 PM »
I'm using a Voodoo and Mediator and when I want to use a nice background picture... (high resolution) when the picture is loaded...I'm losing like 4-5 mb of FAST RAM!? Why this picture is not in Voodoo memory?

It's really annoying for me... I have 32Mb RAM so when you take 5 Mb, than 8 Mb for "buffer", couple of megabytes for other patches, .png icons... I have left like... 14 megabyte of Ram??

Why this stuff is not in the graphic card memory?

When I try open .jpg picture of size around 2-3Mb, my system don't have enough memory?!?

Is this normal? I have no idea about that stuff...

Are you using any patches like FBlit for instance?

No, I don't use and patches like Fblit (actually nothing which makes graphic "faster").

It almost looks like the Voodoo memory is not used at all. Is there any way to check how much memory on Voodoo is empty/busy?

I was thinking that when I connect graphic card the Fastram will not be used for this kind of stuff.  :-o but unfortunately...

One more thing, the higher resolution more Fastram taken :madashell:

Please, anyone with Voodoo+Mediator tell me how is in your case!!

Both Picasso96 and CybergraphX store the bitmaps firstly in fast ram and later in the gfx card ram.
The only spanish amiga news web page/club: Club de Usuarios de Amiga de Zaragoza (CUAZ)

So you mean that "graphic" take a space from both FastRAM and Voodoo the same time? Or Fast ram should be "emptied" after a while? I always see that the same amount of memory is taken for pictures and gfx stuff.

Today Amiga without 64 ram is nothing ;)

Do you mean the jpeg itself is 2-3MB? If so, and the compression factor is around 10:1, then the uncompressed image (and it must be uncompressed for display) will be around 20-30MB... and jpeg might be compressing by far more than 10:1 (5:1 is a high quality file, 20:1 will still give a decent output image).
:)

I went thought this, but even this compressed, takes this 3-5Mb FastRAM. This was fun to make this picture show "fast" just after the booting :).

But I'm still thinking why I have 16Mb of Voodoo ram and I need to lose FastRAM?

Reason for asking is that I can't run a Shapeshifter... since 10-14Mb fast is nothing :( for OS8.1. I mean I "could" but...

BTW. Other topic will be how to make a Voodoo modes work with Shapeshifter, but this will be later :), this think is not accepting any modes, it's asking for 15-bit, not 16-bit (what i have :-? )
