Upgrade to latest version of XOOPS?
« on: August 11, 2008, 03:51:59 PM »
Hi Wayne

Any plans to upgrade to the latest version of XOOPS for the site?

Cheers

There is no upgrade path from what we're running to the current path, plus the newest version isn't backwards compatible with the old Amiga browsers.

We tried at one point long ago to move forward but had to revert back to this.  It was a nightmare as most will recall.

It was bad...  Very bad.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

That's a shame. No chance of moving to another BB?

The problem isn't putting up new software, it's migrating all the old data/accounts/comments/posts/etc to it.  There is no existing software which will do that unfortunately, though I have considered getting rid of all the other stuff and just moving to vBulletin.  Meaning Amiga.org would be reduced to a -- very usable -- forum only type site.

Which version of xoops is currently running?

Also, has there been done any hacks/customizations to either the php code or the db-schema?

I know xoops well, and I know my way around PHP code. I could look into making a migration script for the data, and also an Amiga IBrowse compatible theme for the newest xoops.

I cannot work towards a deadline, but I can look into it. I don´t need access, only version info. And any particular configurations that apply (db type, php version and such).

As one of A.org's highest bandwidth wasters... I am more than happy with the current software. I say NO CHANGE :-D

These are the things I´d like to change:

1) Gallery: When you browse it, you have to go to the top again to go to the next page. (#Gallery navigation at bottom)

2) I´d like to see what I´ve sent. (#Link to out box)

3) In the forum: Link to who posted last, and direct link to it. (#Activity link in forum listing)

4) When posting: Ability to see more than the post you are linking to (#See thread while posting)

5) Linking images from gallery in posts (#image picker for gallery in forum posting editor)

6) BETTER SEARCH

Those are the technical issues in a non prioritized list.

On the editorial side I´d like to see links cleaned up and updated faq and freebies.

Maybe that´s what I´ll donate some time to if no new xoops is needed or wanted.

My vote (if we have any :)) is not to do anything with the site, unless it´s to upgrade to a newer xoops which addresses many of these issues.

The new features offered should be worth the upgrade with the possibility of choosing a theme for users (old for bloodline etc... and new one for those who want a change).

I like the site as it is. I find the interface on a.org much nicer than other forums. If any upgrade becomes necessary, please, please, think of the post counts!!!!! ;-)

I'm not bothered about the look. It is features like a better gallery, ability to see sent PM's, links to who was the last poster, a faster search (man it is sooooo slow) etc...

Keeping the old posts/data would be a MUST for any upgrade. There is too much valuable information here for it to be lost. There must be a way to write a custom script to do the job (as already stated by arnljot).

Is there anyway we can at least look at adding a way to see your sent PM's? Does the database track this? What version XOOPS are we running?

Sadly, the PM module has not been updated since the version we have (verified on their site).

I personally don't go looking at old threads so the most hassle I would see is registering again.  Just keep this current xoopsh*t based Amiga.org in read only form for archive purposes (guess archive.amiga.org?) and move to something better.  AO has a lot of history, but it's the current users that keep AO special, not it's old threads.
