Deluxe Paint "brush" features on a PC program?
« on: August 11, 2008, 03:20:42 PM »
One thing I really miss from the Amiga days was when I could use Deluxe Paint and make a custom brush using an image, whether it was trees or clouds or anything and then I could use it to "paint" on the picture.

I haven't seen anything like that on the PC, unless it's called something else.  Is there any free image/paint programs that allow you to "cut out" an image and use it as a brush?  Does GIMP allow that, because I haven't tried that one.

The programs that I go between on the PC are:

MS Paint  (amazingly simple for simple stuff)
Irfanview
MS Image Composer (which came with MS Frontpage 97)

The Gimp is way too powerful to replace DPaint. And from the other end it is way less powerful as well if it comes to animation. That is, I could manage creating animations on DPaint in a few clicks, in The Gimp I wouldn't even know where to start.

However.... There is this little Windows program that actually does work like good old DPaint. It even uses the same short-keys. It is called Pro-Motion. You can try it for free and have to buy it over time.
Get a SAM, while you can! The new AMIGA is here!

Since you're using Windows I'd recommend Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net/).  It's getting really good, and is free.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Are there any good DPaint clones on Windows which have the same keyboard shortcuts, ie a 1x1 clone of DPaint?

Myself I used DPaint 2 in DOS until 95. Worked great.

This is not a cheap idea, but how about TvPaint for the PC?

Its quite expensive, but if you have MorphOS, AmigaOS4 or Classic Amiga with RTG card I would recommend using TvPaint v3.6 which I find worlds best ever drawing program.

Link:
www.tvpaint.com

The Amiga version which ceased in 1996 is now freeware. Download and use worlds best paint program ever! Nothing beats it :)

to quote from the web site:-)

Features
Generally spoken pro motion is a "pixel pusher" that is working like the famous drawing packages Deluxe Paint or Brilliance published in the past for Commodore Amiga systems.
All tools are optimized for image and animation editing at pixel level for graphics with up to 256 palettized colors per frame.
 :-)
I think Jan is an ex Amiga user that's why its very Dpaint like ( well version 5 not used version 6 )

Nothing comes to close DPaintIV (4.5) when comes to intuitive user interface. AGA-machine with acclerator makes it nearly unbeatable!  Well, PhotoshopCS3 plus gigs ram and dual/quadcore is also excellent tool.

GIMP - Simple Animations.

This can be somewhat ludicrous, but isn't all that different from the way ImageReady does it, which some subset of "web designers" paid full sticker for.
