OS4 Bootable from a CF IDE Adapter??
« on: August 03, 2008, 11:03:05 PM »
Im starting to think that my problems with booting OS 4 are stemming from the CF->IDE Adapter im using with the 2gb sandisk card. The CF->IDE works fine with OS 3.1 so I know its not the hardware.

Once OS4 is installed on it, it loads the os4 bootloader, resets, then gets half way through loading the os and just stops loading - no screens shows, just stays black until I reset.

However when I use a proper IDE hard drive - it works fine?? Is CF->IDE adapters as a boot device ok to use on OS4 Classic??

I have a 4g Sandisk in a CF-IDE adaptor booting and running OS3.9, OS4, and MorphOS. All load and work fine,(apart from a few other teething issues  - no biggies though).

I am sure many other are using them without issue as well...

Another thought...Is the CF-IDE adaptor a 2.5" type with a Master OR Slave jumper, or a 3.5" adaptor with a Master/Slave OR Slave/Master jumper?

A CF card should always be set to master on the CF interface if the end user wishes to boot from it.

Perhaps the problems you are experiencing stem from using a card that is providing information at too fast a rate or one that isn't fully compatible with the interface. Both have been known to happen, especially with today's CF cards that are marked as 40x and faster.

*Addendum*

You might wish to go back into HDToolbox and see how the card is setup (MaxTransfer and Filesystem) wise as Countzero suggests.

I recall one one occasion, I had to disable the Directory Cache at the CF card formatting stage as this caused no end of problems. Perhaps this is also a mitigating factor in the problems you are experiencing.

another thought, you set a wrong max transfer value and experiencing file corruptions with big files. you should see this behaviour under OS 3.x too though.

It's a 2.5" CF adapter set to Master (and 3.5" CDROM IDE set to slave)

Sorted it now thanks - It was a simple case of RTFM i'm afraid - I hadn't set the boot partition type correctly (changing the 3 to a 7)

What was wierd tho - when I used configured the drive using the os4 template in the media toolbox app, I saved the changes to the drive, rebooted, then it kept booting to an old looking work bench (3.1 style) and wouldn't go any further??

In the end to get it working I had to format the card as DOS/3 partition so the installer didn't hang. Then just prior to starting the installer, edit the partition dostype from 3 to 7 (as it stats in manual), save, dont reboot, then install?! Took  me hours to figure that out!! :(

@countzero - had no signs/error messages about any files being corrupted during installation? could they still be corrupted? (everything seems ok now?)
