Where can I find a Mac Disk Tools or startup disk?
« on: August 02, 2008, 04:46:57 AM »
I'd like to get my Mac emulator back up and running through Shapeshifter, but I cannot find my floppy disk for Disk Tools to start it up.  I have MacOS 7.5.1.

Where can I find one, or is there another way to boot up?  I can't boot off of the CD.  I read that the Disk Tools can be downloaded from Apple's site, but I think they removed those long ago because I can't find them.

Hi,

LowEndMac's MacOS page is also useful...

You might be able to find something to un-stuff these on the Amiga and see if the emulator can use these disk images directly, and you'll almost certainly find the tools to do this on a Linux or Windows-based PC.

I tried using StuffIt for the PC, but it states that these boot disk files are in an unknown archive format.

Through some searching, I did manage to find OS 7.5.3 from the Apple site, but it's all in parts.  I think I still need a working Mac to put them all together.  I wasn't sure if 7.5.3 will boot up without a boot disk or not.

Other sites have "links" to Mac Classic boot disks, but they are broken.  So, I haven't had much luck yet in finding a good boot disk.

If I could just get it booted, I can install the OS from there.

Have a look on Emaculation. There's a Fusion/ShapeShifter hardfile with a basic system pre-installed. It's enough to boot the emulator and install the OS.

Edit -
Here's a link:
http://www.emaculation.com/articles/starterdisk.zip

And the guide it comes from:

This is probably due to the HQX-ing of the files; a Mac 'file' is actually in two parts: a regular file and a 'resource fork'. I'm fairly certain the PC stuffit doesn't bother to handle this properly. even if it did, the files would be corrupted as soon as they were written to disk because there's no place to put the resource fork...

You can download 7.5.3 from here. The starter image I linked to above includes Stuffit Expander which can decompress each individual file. Then you just double click on the .smi file (Self Mounting Image) and you will get an image mounted on the desktop containing the 7.5.3 installer. Run the installer and install it on your empty hardfile.

Shapeshifter can run MacOS up to 8.1.  I've got MacOS 8.1 on CD.  I've also got the real MacOS 7.6.1 on 30+ floppies.

I believe the latest version of Shapeshifter is ver. 3.11.

Yup! Should be able to find MacOS8.1 on the likes of eBay for next to nothing too - and installing off CD is so much better than having to resort to floppies!

I bought a Mac for $10 from a local recycling place recently - was a PPC one rather than a 680x0. That runs OS8.6 and gets booted up now and again for the hell of it.

might help - but I don't know if it's 7.0, 7.1 or higher. Just grabbed it when saw it. I have probably some bootstrap file on my Amiga, if needed; 7.0 or 7.1.

Well, launched on UAE/Amiga Forever, it's Shapeshifter 3.11 with 7.0.1 bootfile.

So, I did it years ago - first had a bootable Mac HDF, then made a dedicated Mac partition and made it to the main bootable - it was probably 7.0.1. Then copied those self mounting images into the Mac partition - probably on Amiga side using Shapeshifters MAC: handler. On running emulation then just clicked the first disk image so they got processed. Later I updated upto 7.6.1.
This is from the Info.txt of those 7.5.3 disks:

Instructions:
This software is available as 19 parts of a self-mounting Disk Copy
image. Download all 19 parts to your hard drive and then double-click
on the first part to mount the compressed disk image on your desktop.

Note that self-mounting Disk Images require Mac OS version 7.0.1 or
later. If you are using a version of Mac OS prior to this, you can
download the System 7.5 Network Access floppy disk and boot your
Macintosh from that to use this software.

OK, got my hardfile uploaded - which isn't so easy with fragile A4000 internet connection (several crashes) but here's 7.6.1 bootfile (16 MB):

(when tested, crappy connection :-( )
