Trouble with Worms..
« on: July 22, 2008, 12:47:57 PM »
Hi, I just got a copy of Worms for Amiga (3 floppy disk version) and I can't seem to get it to run. After inserting the first disk a few company logos appear, then the screen turns black and the Amiga goes silent. I'm using an A500 with expanded RAM, does anyone know what the cause is?

Sounds to me like either the actual disk is damaged or the software is corrupt.

Are you able to try it in a different A500?

Unfortunately this is my only one for now :-(. It would suck if it's the disk, as it came reportedly tested and working.
The expander installed is a 1.5MB Gary chip connector type, which I hear can cause computability issues, could that be the problem?

It's not Worms The Director's Cut is it? If so, that's AGA only so won't work on your A500. Failing that, you can actually legally download Worms from Dream17 here:

Link

If the disks are corrupt, you could try downloading the disk images from that site and writing them to your floppies. That way you still have an original boxed copy with the original disks.

Thanks for the link, I may have to try it. It's the original version, has a sticker on the front that says compatible with all Amigas with 1MB RAM.

It's a PAL game. Is your Amiga running in PAL?

It cant be DC, a pointless bit of help really but id be on the look out for an A1200 sometime. It will run miles better on that then an A500 or even an A600.

Hmmm... I had problems running it on my a500 too.. IIRC most versions seemed to require 1MB chip, but then I found version working with 0.5M too... and I had 2,5M fast.

As far as I remember the A1200 has trouble running the original Worms

If you're suggesting getting an A1200 for playing Worms, then he might as well get DC. It's so much better than the original. IMO it's the best version of Worms. The extra features on top of the original make it so much better, and all subsequent versions were tacky.

The original Worms ran perfectly well on my A1200 for years, even from hard drive and with an 060 and Mediator installed - although it had to be run with no startup sequence or booted from the original floppies. Worms checks the amount of RAM available and loads more sounds into chip RAM accordingly if it finds more. It's entirely possible that your chip RAM expansion isn't behaving exactly as native RAM would, causing the machine to freeze. Is it possible to remove/disable the expansion?

I'll agree - Worms DC is the best version of Worms I've played on anything - and I've played quite a few!

I'm very eager to update my Amiga arsenal, but there are people who wouldn't be too happy about me cluttering the place up with more old computers.. ;-) but I think that when the time comes I'll skip right ahead to obtaining an A4000/T for my AGA needs :-D
The thing I'm looking out for at the moment though is a matching SCSI controller (A590, GVP A500HD+, A530). Don't know what I'd do with it, more for looks I guess ;)
It's a pain that this game decided not to work when all the other ones I've tried work fine, I wanted to show off the machine to some friends, and Worms was the only game they were somewhat excited about :-(
I'll try disconnecting the RAM expander's Gary adapter, which should revert it to 512Kb (which means cracking her open yet again ) might solve the problem, we'll see :-)
