a1 or repair my a1200 ppc
« on: July 20, 2008, 02:24:57 AM »
hi there i have an amiga 1200 40 mhz 040 160 mhz ppc with voodoo 3 and mediator bus board which the bus board is now dead so i am reverted back to my bi vision.

im wondering at this point would it be beter for me to go a1 or get a new busboard considering i want to go to os4?

what would the best hardware to go for if i were to get an a1 say if i sell my amiga 1200 stuff to pay towards an a1?

i have no idea about the hardware out there am i able to get a imac and put 0s4 on it?

what specs of hardware are available in the a1 systems and is there support for divx etc as i curretly use a modified xbox for my media as my a1200 is not fast enough.

if so what would a relaistic price be for a system: case motherboard and processor and where is the best to buy and are there any deals with computer and os4?

what realistically would i get for my ppc card and bi vision

i live in new zealand so getting things shipped is a big expence and commitment.

When it comes to OS4 there really aren't many options right now. The A1 is not available at all unless you are willing to pay $1500.00 to $2000.00 US when and if you can even find one. I would say that if you really want to run OS4 the least expensive option would probably be the BPPC and it supports more memory than the CS PPC.

The mac solution just isn't an option, at least not yet. There aren't any confirmed working installations yet that I know of. There are some claims, however even having all of the ingredients I have not been able to even make it boot up past the Kickstart screen yet I have tried. There are several people working with it.

Perhaps the new MorphOS 2.0 and Efika combo for about $400.00 would be a good alternative?

Good Luck,
-Jeff

OS4 will run fine with the hardware you already have, You don't need the Mediator.

If you sell your current kit you could be waiting a long time before you can spend the proceeds on OS4 capable hardware.

A1 SE had an a 600Mhz G3 and is the most probelematic AmigaOne.

A1 XE had either an 800Mhz G3 or G4.

Micro A1 had a 800Mhz G3.

All should be upto the task of running DivX files using DVplayer or Mplayer, G4 is best because it has altivec.

Disgusting isn't it! I cannot believe there is so much demand and that Amiga users have such deep pockets!

Some people view the Amiga as more than just a lowly WHDLoad machine so it is not disgusting at all.
