Which OS for computer artist?

I am building up my 3000T to use as a graphics machine mainly using DPaint, PPaint, Brilliance, DCTV etc.

It has a stock 040/25 processor, KS 3.1, Cybervision 64/3D and soon to be added Deneb USB controller and X-Surf board.

While the main purpose is art I'm sure a few games and other apps will get used.

So, which OS would be best for me?

I don't think that you have much choice really. For that software, you need Amiga OS 3 or better. Your machine can't run Amiga OS 4.0 (or MorphOS) because you don't have a PowerPC accelerator. I'd suggest getting OS 3.9, which is the newest OS that you can install on your machine.

If you don't plan on using your Amiga for Internet use, go with Workbench 3.1 .  It's good and cheap and you can add patches from one of the distros from the emulation scene.  It also comes on Amiga formatted floppy-disks so you won't need a CD-ROM drive to install it.

Otherwise go with AmigaOS 3.9 and both Boing Bag expansions from here.  It's a little heavier than the earlier versions but an '040 should be able to handle it.

Yes...I have a CD drive already so that base is covered.

I was concerned about the headroom needed for OS 3.9 with a stock 040.

Also, sorry for dumb question, but what is Boing Bag?

I too have an amiga with dpaint. I have workbench 3.1 inside an amiga 1200 030/50mhz/18 mb ram. This is good enough for me to get the most out of deluxe paint. I used dpaint to make drawings for my pd amiga game 'wizard of the orb' which is on aminet for free.If my system is good enough for dpaint, I am sure your system (much more powerful than mine) is also. Is only the 3d/animation programs that require lots of horsepower, but believe, dpaint does not need a system as powerful as the ones needed for 3d/raytracing.
Your system is good enough -definitely- to use dpaint, etc.

I ran OS3.9 on my 2000 which had 040 and it made everything faster (upgraded from 3.1, I beleve).

you should do just fine with that.

If you know how to jazz up a workbench then id use 3.1.

I use OS 3.5 still on my 040 A2000. I don't even try to use the internet with this machine, due to the crappy browsers.
I use DPaint, PPaint, Brilliance, TV Paint, ImageFX & Pagestream, plus some others.
Even with "newer" computers on hand, I depend on the Amiga quite a lot for graphics work.
I really like the newer features of 3.5, over 3.1.

If you have an old Pentium4 pc with even 512 megs ram and an agp graphics card you have an amazing Amiga for Dpaint. Brilliance, and such. You'll easily match 040 speeds. If you have a modern machine even better.

I do Dpaint Pixel art on my Macbook with a Wacom Tablet using Amiga Forever. Stunning.

If you're using an real Amiga DCTV is a great addition as it give you 24 bit animations using ECS chipset bandwith.

For those that have a CS060 or PPC and DCTV you can do some amazing stuff.

Lierbag on these forums does some Amazing stuff using an A1200, scala, 030/50 256 megs and scsi drives. Really shows what the amiga was capable of.

I just installed AF2008 and for the first time managed to get workbench running on my MBPro.  :-)
So how did you get DPaint on there?
What resolution do you run it at?

Yeh, I love DCTV...I've done some really good rotoscoping and graphics stuff with it.
How does it improve with a 060 or PPC card?
