i would recomend u to get os3.9  and a pcmcia network card (on aminet check for Cnet and confirm what models works etc)

on the os3.9 cd u have a tcp/ip stack + web browser etc , so u only need that + a pcmcia card , or u can do it in many other ways....but i would have prefered that.

also some specs about your setup would be nice , also some info if you have a hub or 2 network cards in your pc etc...
(i would yet again recomend a hub)

cheers
Whats up with all the hate!

Hallo HAL

You will also need an accelerator card for your A1200 along with some fast RAM. A graphics card is also recommended. You can get a PCI busboard like the Mediator and use a PCI gfx card like Voodoo and a sound card like Soundblaster but you will need to put your Amiga in a tower in that case.

Get a network adaptor.  A lot of NE2000-compatable PC-card ethernet adaptors will work with the 1200.

Q.2 What hardware do I need ???

PC-card ethernet adaptor with a driver (check on Aminet for those), CPU accelerator (I recommend the Blizzard-060), probably a bigger HD and CD-ROM (Get the CPU card w/ SCSI adaptor, and get external units)

Q.3 What software do I need to Surf to web on my old A1200 ???

AmigaOS 3.9, Voyager 3.3 or better, the drivers for your ethernet

Would an Amiga One not be a better buy, I mean for the money you would spend on an old accelerator - you may get more bang for buck....

You connect your cable modem with eg. a PCMCIA Ehternet card, as the other guys said... search eBay for good deals on PCMCIA Ehternet connectors...

I just bought a CNET 3c589C today... so good luck!: US eBay or UK eBay...

And the hardware is up to you what do you want to use your Amiga for? A good start is always a Mediator from Elbox or a G-Rex but the G-Rex is not supported and is hard to get working (So I've heard)... With a mediator you can connect many PC PCI cards to your amiga like above mentioned...

Software for surfing the Net is different from people to people on what they choose... But here are some stuff:

TCP/IP stacks:
Miami( and DX) are the most known of them...
Also AmTCP and Genesis are know to work good... Sorry I can't remember the urls but they come with some of the OS releases (Can't remember now)...

Browsers:
IBrowse (Commercial)
AWEBII (OpenSource)
Voyager (Commercial)

All three have pros and cons... Test them your self...

Hope it helps... And again: Welcome to Amiga.org

Well, HALlo there!

As was mentioned, the new OS release (OS4) is soon (months) to be released and you ought to think carefully before spending money on your old 1200. Your choices are:

1. Beef up the 1200 to minimal present-day standards (cable modem, OS3.9), possibly an accelerator. There are several accelerators on the market, the best is probably the Blizzard PPC. But this is unlikely to be able to run OS4 when it comes out.

2. Buy yourself an AmigaOne (pure PPC). At the moment it will only run Linux (and anything that Linux can run, including Mac-On-Linux). The release of OS4 for the AmigaOne is still some months away, we've only seen demos of some parts of it so far. When it comes out, you will NOT be able to run old metal-hitting 68k games on it.

3. Buy yourself a Pegasos (if you can find one) and go the MorphOS way. It's PPC, it's fast, and claims to run 68k legacy Amiga apps. Don't know about custom chip emulation (Nate, can you answer that?). Pegs are scarce because only a fixed number were made. A new version (Peg2) is in the works but not yet available for sale.

All in all, I'd spend the minimum on the 1200 - enough to get it on the net and no more. I'd defer any other expense until the market clears in a few months' time.
