GVP A530 and multiple scsi-drives ?
« on: July 01, 2008, 01:10:45 PM »
Finally I got my A530. It has 4GB drive in but bearings seems to be dry so sound is very high pitch whining. Im planning to replace HDD with "new" one.

Im planning to put another drive on same (but longer) scsi-cable and copy files from old to new.  But I cant find information of A530 supporting multiple drives.

Has anyone more information or perhaps experience?

SCSI-world is part of my everyday-life so im not practicing first time with this antique ;)

According to the Amiga hardware database, it has internal and external connector, so I'd assume it is intended to support multiple devices. Maybe the content of the install disk on that page will tell you more.

Then the rest (SCSI id, proper termination etc.) should be no problem for you :-)

My A530 had four hard drives linked via the internal SCSI cable, a Zip drive and a CD-ROM using the external.  That's a full SCSI chain, including the controller.

If you can, get a GuruROM, too.

i've had on one scsi chain...

ID7:- A530 controller
ID6:- external CD/RW
ID5:- external DDS3 Dat drive
ID4:- external 73Gb SCA ultra scsi
ID3:- external 73Gb SCA ultra scsi
ID2:- external 73Gb SCA ultra scsi
ID1:- A1200 Blizzard PPC scsi conroller
ID0:- scsi2ide bridge/IDE2CF adapter/4GB CF card (in the A530).

so yeah i'd say its happy with multiple drives.

 :-)

A500, A600, A1200x3, A2000, A3000, A4000 & a CD32.
and probably just like the rest of you, crates full of related "treasure" for the above XD

That CF card setup is really cool.  What program did you use to run the DDS3 drive?

You can have more than one controller in a SCSI chain.

I`m using 2 at the minute.
Very cool.

@LoadWB
i use Diavolo to run the DDS3 drive. i only have DDS2 tapes though, but no big deal, i only use it rarely. but runs like a champ. got my old A4000 backed up on there. when i get a stable working 3.1rom'd 060 based machine, i may do a full restore one day ;-)

@Colani1200
i have both machines on the same SCSI bus, the A530 can see the compact flash card and boots the A500 from there.
the A1200 can see the CF card, but has an IDE drive with a higher boot priority, so boots from that instead.

with the PPC cards (and other scsi controllers i'm certain), you can change the scsi ID of the controller, so allowing multiple controllers on one bus. handy for data sharing, especially as my A500 has a bit of a poor ethernet implementation that can't currently rival a good 56k modem for throughput. so i download what i need on an A1200, dump to shared disk, and install/run on the A500. easy peasy :)

A500, A600, A1200x3, A2000, A3000, A4000 & a CD32.

Why the hell do you need so much space on your Amiga Hard drives??  I`ve been struggling to fill a 20GB drive for about 7 years now...

Just curious...

Bugger that... I want to know why his A500 has such a poor Ethernet implementation when he has the apparent cash to plonk down on 73GB SCSI hard drives  :crazy:

I know, but without a special system to handle accesses, I would imagine that this is quite prone to data corruption?!

they were the *ahem* *COUGH* DVD ISO storage array i had hanging off the back of the apps server at my last work place. driven by a PM1564U3 raid controller, with the DDS3 drive and CD/RW. the company got amalgamated, so we had to find homes for "unofficial" company stuff before it got audited. :-D

as i don't have scsi on any of my PC's even though i do still have the raid card, there is no point using them for on line storage given the current price of terrabyte SATA drives at the moment. So they are hooked into the only machines i have that can use them.... most of the time, they sit there not even switched on...

@LoadWB
lol, pay?  :lol:

@Colani
its pretty safe. amigaOS isn't as greedy as Windows when it comes to drive ownership. looks at the drive, reads the RDB, mounts the partitions. thats it. no drive polls, no filesystem journaling, no continuous seeming random registry reads or swap space paging, plus SCSI is fairly clever when it comes to multiple controller access as in all the other devices on the bus, know what what is happening to what device, so no multiple command issues from different controllers to read or write the same disk block at the same time.  :-)

Well, it seemed to work like charm as it was supposed to do.  Next thing to do is move some old Sun external harddrives behind A530 :)   disk-to-disk backup !

The 411 and 611 boxes work very well with my Amiga systems :-)
