XC68882 = MC68882 ?

Are the XC68882 FPUs the same as the MC68882 FPUs?

I've seen XC68882R50As and MC68882R50As around and I was wondering...

The difference between XC and MC is that it has been fully verified / certified and all bugs are known and documented. It's performance within the military temperature range is known. It makes a motorola part acceptable for military uses.

This usually takes several years and several revisions of a chip to become MC certified. It took 6 revisions and 3-4 years for the 68060 to become MC.

I've just re-checked and there were several mask spins for the 68882 (not to say any were functional)

An "XC" rated FPU will work just fine.

No. They still sell XC parts. It means that it is still in the qualification period and you should use it for non critical applications. As has already been said XC will work fine

That is not a valid rule. It may or may not be true for the 68882. (Is it true?)

The 68040 and 68060 both run hotter in XC variants but not because of the XC/MC status but because they changed technologies between XC and MC. A lower level geometry often means less heat.
