A1200: Using a PCMCIA CDROM with OS3.9
« on: June 30, 2008, 12:24:31 AM »
I managed to land myself one of these CDROM Drive off eBay.  I'm having a few issues setting it up with my new install of OS3.9 on my 1200 (I've alredy used WinUAE to install OS3.9 on my Amiga's HD).  The external drive itself appears to be a regular 4X SCSI drive (set to UNIT #1) and it's not currently terminated.

This is what I've done so far:

1) Installed the PCMCIA driver which I got on a floppy with the CDROM drive.
2) Installed CacheCDFS from the OS3.9 install disk.
3) Edited the CacheCDFS 'CD1' (which is installed under storage/dosdrivers) to use my PCMCIA driver (vob_pcmcia.device).

Double clicking the CD1 icon when an audio CD is in the drive creates a new icon on the desktop 'CD1:CDDA' (so far so good), clicking on this CD icon launches OS3.9's built in CDROM player.  I can successfully play/stop/eject the music CD but it's only showing half of the tracks and the playtime counter stays at 0:00 while the CD is playing.  Are these normal issues when using the built in CD player or is it just my config?

The other (more serious) issue is that I can't do anything if I put a non-music CD in the driver (eg the original OS3.9 disc).  I was assuming that I'd get a different CD icon on the desktop for a non-music CD and that I'd be able to browse the contents of the CD in the same way that I can when inserting the OS3.9 disc in WinUAE?

The CacheCDFS prefs open correctly but I cannot see any settings in there that help.

I've also tried to navigate to CD1 using the shell and get a 'not a dos disk in device CD1' error message :pissed:

BTW I'm a 'new' Amgia user so I haven't go a clue about anything....be gentle

 Hello Nova.

Glad to see you here too.

You can always try IDEfix97 from Aminet to recognise your CD without much hassle.

BTW: open the CD case and set termination to "on" on the CD unit. This will spare you for a lot of headaches.
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

Hiya again :-D

Is IDEFix97 better than CacheCDFS then?  Can you have both or will they stuff each other up and I thought CacheCDFS was newer anyway?

What happens if you don't have it terminated, I thought this was only needed if you had more than one device on the chain?

I'll have a look to see if I can find a termination switch inside the CD case, otherwise I could always buy a terminator if needed.
