Pinball Dreams Hard Drive?
« on: June 28, 2008, 03:57:27 PM »
Hi, I'm trying to get This working on my stock 1200
with 810 mb hard drive

http://www.back2roots.org/Games/Files/Pinball%20Dreams%2C2/

I was told that it should work but I've had no joy.
Now I'm wondering if it will work without extra ram ?

I have set the LOWMEM tooltype but jst still complains.

I've looked at the WHDLOAD version but this would require extra ram (the cheapest i can find is the 8 meg trapdoor upgrade from www.analogic.co.uk).

This seems a bit expensive.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The stock 2MB of RAM just doesn't cut it anymore. You need more. Try Softhut, Amigakit, Vesalia, or eBay to find an trapdoor accelerator or RAM expansion.

If you're absolutely, 100% sure that a tiny bit of WHDLoad gaming is all you're going to do on the machine, a PCMCIA SRAM card could work as well. Might be slightly cheaper or easier to find. 4MB is the maximum size for one of those. Definitely not the recommended solution for a variety of reasons, but it'll do in a crisis.

you might be able to get it by booting with no startup sequence and just setting up a few things before running from the shell...

used to do it all the time back in the day but I can't remember exactly what needs setting...

might just be copying some stuff from envarc: to ram:env, then assign env: ram:env...

Back2roots version is still only WHDLOAD anyway (I think, from memory).

Dude, seriously.  I understand that money might be a bit tight at the moment, what with fuel etc, but SERIOUSLY consider getting some FASTRAM for the 1200, it runs like a {bleep} without it.

When the CPU runs off Fastram, it actually runs slightly better, as when the A1200 is running, the system is having to share accesses to CHIPRam with the custom chips.  If the CPU has access to Fastram, it is *ALOT* happier.

You will also find WHDLOAD works ALOT better with it.
