Blizzard 1260 running fine now at the correct speed
« on: June 18, 2008, 02:35:12 PM »
Hi all my blizzard 1240 card that i converted to a 1260 was not working properly and sysspeed was telling me it ran at only 16mhz and 21mips. I located the problem down to the amigas stock psu wich can only pump out around 23watts. this was when i had my powerflyer gold fitted on the mobo it was drawing more power than the stock supply to give so the 1260 suffered and didn't run at the correct speed. I just disconnected the powerflyer and ran sysspeed again and it stated 68060 running at 50mhz and 65.8mips which is now i belive the correct speed with 60ns ram fitted.

All i say to everyone dont use a stock amiga 1200 psu if you have more than a harddrive and accelerator board attatched as this gave me a real headache to say the least.

Thanks again all who contributed to helping me with my conversion of which pictures of the finished board can be seen at the english amiga board.
Have fun all

Amiga, keep the faith :-)

Nice work! What equipment and technique did you use for desoldering the old 68040 chip?

I can't say this is really a newsflash. It is common knowledge the standard A1200 psu isn't really powerfull enough to drive anything more than an A1200 with harddrive and possibly a not to large memoryexpansion. Saying the stock A1200 psu is not well suited to powering turbocards and the likes, compares to saying your Amiga is easier to control if you use a mouse...

Otoh, it's nice to know your Blizzard 1260 is now running correctly! :-)
Life sucks. Then you die. Then they throw mud in your face. Then you get eaten by worms. Be happy it happens in that order... My Amiga 1200

Congrats! :pint:

Strange problem, you'd think the card would just "not work" (or occasional hang, random reboots, etc) as opposed to doing what it did. Glad you figured it out.

Hi jeff, i used a 50watt solder station with leadfree solder, i much prefer leaded solder though but it is now i think illeagal to use it and i have bundles of the stuff bummer. I attached the board to an revolving metal stand which i made for this type of work, it grips the board so it is easily to get to any part of the board with the soldering iron. I used solder braid to easliy desolder the old 040 cpu and fitted the 68060 socket and carefully soldered each point making sure to leave no dry joints, pretty difficult this was but got there in the end.

Thanks

I have to agree, it has been pretty common knowledge that with any upgraded CPU card on the A500/600/1200 you need a beefier PS...  With that said I do have a 1200 with a 1240 card and it seems to run ok on the stock PS...  But that may be a freak occurance.

I never had problems using a DCE Blizzard 1260 w/ SCSI-IV in my A1200 with the stock power supply....
