Resetting a Lost ScreenMode
« on: June 12, 2008, 12:37:24 PM »
Could someone remind me, it's been a few years now. The last time I shut down my Amiga (OS3.9) I'd been messing with the screen modes and saved one I can't run on my current monitor. I need to reset the ScreenMode so I can run my Amiga again.

I have an Emergency Boot disk which allows me to boot up and run with a television screen. I can get into the Workbench: partition and locate the ScreenMode icon in the Prefs drawer.

I have been into Workbench:Prefs/Envarc/Sys and renamed the existing screenmode.prefs icon so it can't use that on bootup. However, I can't open the ScreenMode icon in Workbench:Prefs to select the correct mode. The icon is the 'wrong type'. I'm obviously doing something wrong and i'm sure someone here will put me right.

Many thanks, JaX

It's been a few years also, since I last used my 1200. However,I do know that if you are getting a 'wrong type' message for an icon, then that is exactly what is wrong. Have you ever used the IconEd (IconEditor) within the Workbench? If you start this up and drag in the offending icon into it,it will tell you what this icon is(at the top of the IconEd screen,in the drop-down menus). There are several types of icons-the Screenmode icon needs to be able to read and open(execute) the screenmode info attached to it. If this icon is the wrong type,it cannot do this,so it needs to be changed. The IconEd facility will do this for you-simply specify in the submenu which type it needs to be.I hope this info is helpful to you!

I think I confused things a little. When I try to open the ScreenMode icon, nothing happens. There's no response. I got the 'Wrong Type' message when I tried to open the icon using Ed the script editor. I couldn't remember whether you changed ScreenMode stuff using Ed or what.
Many of the icons in Workbench give no response when double-clicked. Is this because I've booted from the Emergency floppy?
At present I have a VooDoo graphics card running on a Mediator. The Devs/Monitors drawer contains only VooDoo and the low frequency drivers, PAL and NTSC I think. I'm pretty sure I only need to set the correct ScreenMode to get output to my TFT monitor. It was running on a TFT before I messed it up. All advice welcome.

If you have a Workbench disk, for example 3.0 or 3.1, just copy the screenmode.prefs to your hard disk and reboot.

Or just rename screenmode.prefs to screenmode.prefs_old. It will be recreated when you press save in ScreenMode prefs.

@motorollin

I renamed the screenmode.prefs file in Envarc but I can't open ScreenMode in Workbench:Prefs to set the correct driver.

Edit - sorry, I skimmed your OP. Try copying screenmode prefs from the Workbench disk to your hard disk, or try running screenmode prefs from the shell instead of double clicking the icon.

Try lauching the prefs from shell:
Code: [Select]
.> sys:prefs/screenmode

If that works then your workbench and/or icon.library is fubared somehow.

Once you've renamed/deleted envarc:sys/screenmode.prefs, reboot without the emergency disk (in fact, try a cold reboot) and try running SYS:Prefs/Screenmode either from Workbench or Shell. Don't use Ed for icons.

If the Reaction classes aren't available when you boot from the Emergency disk, that's why you can't access Screenmode Prefs.
