How can I make iBrowse runs faster?
« on: June 12, 2008, 02:08:08 AM »
I'm using iBrowse 2.4 a couple of hours now. The last time I used it was 1996-97, I don't remember. Nice days! Anyway, is there anybody here that he can help me to make iBrowse run faster? Faster means, disable unnecessary options (like javascript?) or something about the caches kept in memory. Regards. :-)

Increase the disc and ram cache, its in the preferences some where.

if you are using native chipset, limit screens to 64 colors.  install fblit and ftext.  with javascript you will get a lot of "lengthy javascript running" errors with modern sites.  you can limit how long these scripts go for before they get cancelled, its in the prefs somewhere. turn off image downloading if you don't need to see images. buy an accelerator, more ram or a graphics card

Ok. I have a CyberStorm MK2 060 with 128MB Fast RAM, Voodoo4 graphics card, but I see that iBrowse is quite slow. Or is my idea :-?

I have a comparably powered Amiga to you (have we forumed about this before?), and find iBrowse to be very useable.

Javascript: I run with this disabled most of the time, and as pointed out, it's a huge user of computrons. Most sites are bloated with Javascripts with no noticable improvement in their function or appearance.  Some sites that I don't want to surf without require it, Yahoo, etc.  It's simple enough to switch it on when needed.

Caching: I have less ram than you and I only allow browsers to  cache to the Ramdisk.  This costs a little speed the first time a site loads but is faster later. Most importantly, I have never suffered a corrupted hard drive since doing this.  Upon power down, the cached files are sent to oblivion where they belong.  Why store thousands of small temp files that are destined to be useless in a few months?

I can't remember the source, but years ago, some one here pointed me to a site with tips, fonts, etc to optimize iBrowse and make it display pages more like IE and Netscape.

You might notice slow scrolling if you have a Mediator.

IBrowse is faster than AWeb ou Voyager here.

When you have "slow" website, it's not because of IBrowse, it's because of the 060 (large/numerous jpeg, complex pages parsing, etc. is slow to handle @50MHz).

@ wurzel

I agree with you. I didn't notice any slow scrolling with iBrowse.

I want to view only Amiga-related sites, so I suppose JavaScript is better to be turned off.
