good Joystick recommendation?
« on: June 04, 2008, 09:17:48 AM »
I started playing a few games on my A1200 recently.  I used a quickshot joystick.  Compared to my WinUAE set up that uses a Playstation-copy controller, the quickshot was crap.  In fact most amiga games become much more playable and fun under emulaion because the analogue controller is so much more accurate and responsive.  Can anyone recommend a good controller for the amiga?

You can use PSX controllers on Amiga (link) if that's your thing.

The best ones IMO are the Competition Pro series (also available as USB sticks for PC's) (link)
Code 6502 asm or... DIE!!

Competition Pro 5000, what else? :-D The original old version of course, not the ones that were recently remanufactured by Speed Link.

If you prefer Joypads, you might also pick a CD32 controller.

Best joystick I've ever used is the Konix Speedking (Epyx 500XJ - USA Version) ... virtually indestructible!

They simply blow the competition pro's out of the water  especially when used on games that required enormous amounts of joystick abuse like Hypersports on the 'ol C64.

Sadly these are getting more rare as the days go by ... good thing I have a couple tucked away  :-)

What you really want is a decent Australian arcade grade joystick. Multicoin Amusement’s Starcursor is the one I recommend.

They made a later version which was a little more rounded, and someone I found on Google seems to think it was named teh Starblazer, but was essentially the same joystick.

Set on a good table space, this thing is a brilliant stick, with the buttons on the bottom, making them easier to use, without having to reach around the stick. It was A-grade quality build too.

Behold the Starcursor:

Amiga FTW!

Any classic Competition Pro with microswitches.

Watch out for the Prof. Competition, though. They suck.. Plastic shaft. :-P

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT touch the Competition Pro USB. Worst piece of crap I have seen in years. As a matter of fact, it broke once again two days ago and is standing in three pieces in front of me.

If you hadn't the chance to use one of the greek joysticks made especially for Amiga from Aneroussis Control, then you have seen nothing. Top quality, I have one of those since 1991 and still rocking. ;-)

Zipstik all the way for me!
My favourite one has worked for nearly 25 years (has it really been that long?), and I never had any problems with it.

I have loads of new in box Epyx 500XJ joysticks in both red and the yellow version which features autofire. If anyone wants to buy one (or 10) please send me a PM.

Sega Genesis joysticks - If memory severs they even use the old Atari joystick interface so they work with the Amiga directly. No adapters.

Give me a good old Atari 2600 joystick any day.

I think, Therefore - Amiga....

My favorite was similar to that one:

The Wico Ergostick

It was like a speedking in design, but with soft rubber all over it, making it really comfortable to hold. A friend of mine used to say it looked like a wad of art gum with the Bic Man standing on top, but it had those really solid Wico microswitches and a great feel.
