Hi,

Can one of you guys who's gotten Samba to work PM or e-mail me?  I've already got a network set up consisting of Win98 & XP machines, and now my A1200, using a Linksys EC2T card.  I can connect to the network using either Miami or Genesis (Genesis seems to be the better of the two), ping other machines, and pull up my hub diagnostics (http://192.168.1.1 - it's a Linksys hub, too) using Voyager, but Samba is just killing me!  My machine is already a hack running on top of a patch on top of a hack (OS4 - Please!), but right now all I'm getting is the guru.  Any tips?

Thanks,
Mike

@Oldsmobile_Mike
Have you looked at amigasamba.org ?
Setting up a *basic* Samba service on the Amiga is fairly easy, you just have to remember that Win98 and above use encrypted passwords.
Also, have a look through the Yahoo! amigasamba group mailing list, there`s bound to be people who have had similar problems to you on there.
I`m off out and about for the next few days, but your`re welcome to PM me to help get it going
On schedule, and suing

Yup, I got it to work.

But I can't help you, sorry.

I just followed the instructions on the webbpage as far as possible.

The only problem I have is that I can't share drives or drawers from the amiga.

I use a saparatly prefs save file for the samba changes just because nobody remote should be able to hack in and use samba for there own intensions.

I have no proble with using Miami.
And on the plus side, the install instructions on the samba webbpage is for miami ;-) .

What version of samba are you trying to use?
Because newer versions of samba is diffrent both in use and prefs system.

I use Samba 2.0.7 only because thats the one the webbpage is refering to.

So I think you should do the same and if you get that to work THEN move on to newer version.

Hope tyhis helps!

If you are just connecting to shares on Windows machines and not planning on sharing out Amiga drives, the easiest thing to do is download SMBFS.

It took me a while to get Samba proper running, IIRC it refused to work because I had a mismatch of hostnames within Samba config and Miami.

I've achieved  551 kbytes/s download on a 40MHz 030 with Genesis and ncftp.

Unfortunately, there aren't any compatible 100Mbps 3Com cards, so the limit is probably around 10 Mbytes/s, no matter how fast the CPU.

10 Mbits/s - which is 1.25 Mbytes/s

Yeah, sorry. I meant to say 1 Mbytes/s (shaving off the 0.25 to allow for the overhead of TCP etc.).

I use a "LinkSys Model No:EC2T" with cnet.device and the card works great on my A1200.  I've never had a problem with it.

Hmm... I've seached eBay for some of the cards on the list...

And it seems like there are nothing of interest for me.

I've tried some internet retailers too...
And I can't seem to find it any cheaper than 30 euro... Wich is abit overpriced in my eyes...

Ehm, how much did you guys buy yours for? and where? What's a reasonble price?

ncafferkey was that on a PCMCIA card?

I've got a 060/50 and the best I've got from my connection was 483.6 kB/s and that was when I was connected to a LAN.

The limit for PCMCIA card for A1200 is around 5mb(500-600kB/s raw speed), A1200 only has a 16bits cardbuss and thats the hold back.

I bought mine for around 12 Euro (120 Kronor).

Don't buy typ2 there no reason for you to by that because A1200/A600 can only use type 1 and don't buy faster than 10mb/s your cardbuss won't give more than 500-600 kB/s in the best case.

Yes, a 3Com PCMCIA card.

I don't think just being 16-bit would hold it back that much, otherwise there probably wouldn't be any 10/100 PCMCIA cards.

The A1200/A600 can use Type II, but not Type III. This just refers to the height.

@Doobrey

According to Software Hut's page, NetConnect only contains Genesis.  Oh foo, and to think I almost got it working - that is until I got to the part about needing a registered version of Miami (following steps from amiga samba web page).  Any idea how to do this under Genesis?  What I'm most interested in is file & print sharing.

Much thanks,
Mike
