Upgrading to OS 3.9
« on: May 28, 2008, 10:30:17 PM »
Is it worth upgrading from 3.0/3.1 to OS 3.9 or even 3.5?

I am considering buying os 3.9 but would I notice any major differences?

Only unless you want to slow down your Amiga.  :-D

I upgraded from 3.1 to 3.9 on an A1200 68030 @ 50mhz w/ 16mb Ram, now I wished I hadn't... Hehe.

The only nice thing is a Dock... but you can just leave out icons to place them on the desktop or use ToolManager etc...

A fast 3.0/3.1 is better imho...  :-)
Machines:
- A1200, Blizzard 1260 w/ 64MB RAM, 1.2GB HD, PCMCIA WiFi, AGA w/ RGB Adapter, OS3.9
- Pegasos I, G3 600Mhz, 512MB, Radeon 9200se, 80GB HD, AmigaKit WiFi Card, MOS 1.4.5
- Mac Mini, G4 1.5ghz, 512MB (1GB Soon), Radeon 9200 64MB, 80GB HD, OSX 10.5 (Leopard)
- PCs, Laptops... *yawn*... :D

I also vote for OS3.9.  It offers much more.  I always get a chuckle out of the people who want to use 3.0/3.1 because of it being faster.  If you want a really fast booting system just go back a little farther and get a C-64.  It boots instantly to basic upon power-up.  I really believe it is for the good of the Amiga community to standardize things and get everyone using 3.9.  Then we are all on the same page.

It depends what you want to do. For example, in my A4000T I use 3.9 of course, but on my A1200 that I use for adventure games, 3.1 is enough.

That's it really, it comes down to what you want to do with it. Personally using a couple of Amigas, I have OS3.9 on my main one which I use for most things, and wouldn't have it any other way, but I also have a small one which I'm using as a retro games system, and that's staying on 3.1... I've used 3.9 on an 030 and haven't noticed any real difference speed-wise apart from the reboot at cold boot time. I know most of the stuff that's different you can get patches to do instead, but it's nice to have them there as part of the system.

I agree!  But let's not stop there, I would like to see work started on moving 3.9 forward again, because with the state of the lawsuit, who knows if or when work on OS4 will produce anything that will make us want to put 3.9 to rest and move on.

Even then, there will always be those few of us (like me) that want to use the Classic Amiga hardware to its fullest and for as long as it keeps booting.

If someone more capable than I would organize picking up where others stopped with development on AmigaOS3.9 Boing Bag 3 and go forward, I would be willing to do anything I can do to help.

If you have an RTG system with a big hard drive ie > 4 gig then OS 3.9 is nicer and less hassle.  Its also nice to get a free TCP stack for internet use. But then you have to put up with a reboot on cold start.  I did have an A4000 with a CV64 and newicons with tool manager and tools daemon, magic menu, simplefind, arc extract, Miami and DOpus4 and a 4 gig hard drive (only 50% full at the time).  This was functionally the same as OS 3.9.  But I got OS 3.9 anyway and I still HATE the cold double reboot.  And there are few useful utilities that only work with OS 3.1.

If you have an A1200 or less with no rtg and hard drive less than 4 gig, then stick to OS3.1 with Magic workbench, 8 colors screens, magic menu, tool manager, tools daemon, MUI, simplefind, Arc extract and Diropus4.  The icon system in Os3.9 is slower and looks ugly in less than 32 colors, especially if you only have PAl or NTSC screens.  If you have an accelerator, this OS 3.1 system will fly.

Why MagicWB and 8 colors? I think NewIcons or even GlowIcons in 32 colors are far more better (if you have at least a 030 accelerator with some Fast RAM), but you need a laced resolution for better view.

Stefcep2 pretty much nailed it.  Without RTG, 3.9's icon engine is slower and not very attractive. There should be an option in the installation to load everything except the icons and their display engine.  (There isn't is there? Grin)
