disk read write errors when some invisable limit reached?

i recently fired up my PPC A1200 after having it sit idle for a couple of months, and found it had developed read/write errors on the hard disk on one or two blocks. so thought "screw it", formatted, and did a fresh install.

A1200 rev1D4, PPC040scsi, BVPPC, 60GB 1.8" hitachi drive, slimline slotloadDVD, 192MB ram, IDEfix express, subwayUSB, netgear FA411 pcmcia nic, nanoATX psu.

installed the following from floppy with a 3.9Gb partition.
OS3.1, IDEfix Express, cybergraphics4.1, poseidonUSB,
installed the following from usb stick.
cybergraphics4.2v7, poseidonUSB 3.8, amigakit easynet, Blizfix.

so far so good.
wanted to play wipeout2097 with my PSX joypad to amiga adapter. installed warp3D 4.2, installed the version of warp up off of the wipeout CD. warp3d 68k demos work, no joy running the PPCwarp3d demos using the old v4 warpup drivers off the game CD. installed OS3.9. installed the internet software - as amigakit's easynet doesn't seem to like using the cnet16.device even when renamed to cnet.device, installed warpup V5 (still not installed wipeout itself yet).
still the warp3d ppc doesn't work.
installed wipeout. completed ok. tested PPC stuff, no luck rebooted many times testing different things, then... system3 has a read/write error. thought "meh, whatever, click cancel". command promt. rebooted, command prompt. execute s:startup-sequence, read/write error, cancel, "unable to find file s:startup-sequence", dir s:, no startup-sequence! wtf?
so pulled the disk out, plugged in a 73Gb SCA scsi drive in an external box into the PPC's scsi port... and started all over again, with another 3.9Gb partition...
re-installed everything, and eventually, same problem! seems do be at just over the 100Mb...

but it gets better. "device DH0 is not a valid dos disk!"

what the frak is going on? what am i doing wrong? it seems to be when i reach a certain point of amount of data on the hard disk i get disk errors. i am using standard FFS as the filesystem (amiga ForF**ksSake filesystem)

sorry for the story, but its frustrations like this that made me sell out of amiga's last time round... (which i regret to this day)

If you want to stick with FFS then you need to make sure that you are using the latest version of FFS. There are 2 versions of FFS on the OS3.9 CD. Make sure you get the latest version.

You have to make sure that you put the newest version of FFS into the RGB of the hard drive. The boot partition must be under 4GB.

I've got a 40GB drive (split into about 6 partitions) in a 4000D running OS3.9 without any problems.

What can happen is that once you reach a certain limit on a partition it wraps around and starts writing back over the data at the start of the partition!!

That's why you need an updated file system with 64 bit support. There's plenty of choice, i.e. SFS etc

I got FFS working so decided to stick with it. No problems to date even though some of my partitions are 75% full!!
