Deneb installation problem
« on: May 26, 2008, 06:08:52 PM »
I encounter problems installing my new Deneb card. I read the manual, I did exactly what it says but nothing.

First of all, the jumper is in RESCUE mode, I can see the 2 leds on the card (FPGA and RESCUE mode lit). I got in the Amiga Early Startup to check if everything is ok. And everything is ok. I got the 2 new entries working.

But the manual says next to boot. So I boot but nothing happens. I supposed to see a folder or something on the workbench right? But nothing happens. Any ideas?

With the jumper in the "rescue" position, you should see a folder on the workbench. Perhaps it is off the bottom of the visible screen though, or obscured by another icon.

Try Arranging all icons on the desktop (Right Amiga key + .)

I already did that, but nothing happens. Even from CLI, I typed just for fun "denebinstall:" to see, but nothing is mounted.

Is this in your A4000T?

Are you also using any devices on your internal scsi bus?

Installed on my A4000T system, is my Voodoo4 GFX Card, a Scandoubler, a VLab Y/C card and a Netgear MA311 PCI wireless card and of course Deneb card. Also I use only one hard drive and a DVD-RW, nothing else.

Are the hard drive or DVD drive on the internal SCSI of the A4KT?

If so, this could be the problem.

Both are connected on the internal SCSI bus of my A4000T. But I don't understand if this is a problem how I can install Deneb, if I can't boot to workbench? From floppies? :-o  :-?

You might be able to set the PIO mode jumper and do it that way.

Apparently (and I'm only repeating what I have read in the manual and elsewhere) Buster 11 will only allow one DMA zorro device to operate at once. Since the internal scsi of the A4Kt operates as a DMA device, you will only be able to operate Deneb in PIO only mode whilst there are devices on the internal scsi bus.

Personally, I'd ask Mr Boehmer for advice, since I've not explicitly read anywhere that the "rescue" jumper and PIO jumper should be set at the same time. Logically it should be possible, since you must be able to upgrade the firmware in a non-DMA capable zorro environment (A2K, A1200, etc), but it wouldn't hurt to play it safe.

In the longer term, I'd look getting an accelerator with built-in scsi, and moving your devices onto that. That way you'll be able to operate the Deneb in DMA mode.

I have Buster v11 installed. But maybe the problem would be the VLab Y/C zorro card. I will try without that, so Deneb would be the only Zorro card installed. But I didn't see any jumper about selecting PIO mode. :-?

I've just got my Deneb manual, you are right, there is no jumper to set for PI0 mode, it looks like this is selected depending on the choice of device driver.

I was getting confused with the zorro2 mode jumper.

In that case, I'm afraid I don't know matey, best bet is to ask Mr B next time he's online.

after the installation on a z3 machine deneb should be working in z3 pio mode on next boot. the dma mode has to be enabled manually, so this should not be the problem u encounter. normally deneb plays some intro on rgb while/after initiated. you can interrupt it by klicking. i assume also it would be best to try z2 mode first. the mediator or whatever u have underneath ur voodoo could also possibly cause a problem although while i cant use dma on my machine, i already ruled it out as a cause of the problem.

Guess you are a "watchdog victim" - try the "TST" jumper in addition to "RESC", this should do the job. A new firmware is under test which will have a more simple way of dealing with situations in which a broken CPU card or broken ROM module makes the machine go wild (deactivate and activate FlashROM by Ctrl-A-A).

PIO or DMA is selected by device driver.

@boot_wb: Rescue mode always is Zorro II by default. The "ZII" jumper only works in normal operation, if "RESC" is set it will always win (and btw, due to jumper design you can either set "RESC" or "ZII", but not both at the same time).

If you have questions on any DENEB issue it is always best to mail me directly - as you can see here in this thread confusion is the result if several people are discussing with only some kind of "half knowledge", which will confuse other people searching for answers.
