Mediator a4k Voodoo5 driver crashing?
« on: May 26, 2008, 11:36:37 AM »
Hi,

I've been having issues with the voodoo5 card in the a4k for a while now, the drivers seem to crash, giving gfx corruption and essentially making it irrecoverable, this usually happens after a few hours, even doing nothing, sometimes the voodoo comes up again after a reboot, has anyone else had similar experiences?

I would strongly suspect that something in your A4k is overheating. Most likely the furnace like Voodoo5 chip.... Can you add a fan and/or better heatsink?

On my prometheus the Voodoo5 works fine - except when I select "execute command" from the workbench menu (I assume other dialog boxes would cause the same issue, but this is the only one I've found so far).
This results in vertical lines down the left hand 1/3rd of the screen, and all text on the entire screen becomes garbled.
Works fine with the same settings using a Voodoo3, so for now I've just left the Voodoo5 out.

I'd like to figure out the correct settings though - I'm sure that it is just a P96 setting or tooltype which I need to set.

Doesn't cause any lockups or crashes though, although obviously it hasn't been on for hours at a time with such an issue!

It happened again, just powering off wont do, if i pull the cord and leave it out for a minute, and stuff it back in, power up, then it works fine for a few more hours, anyway, im hoping elbox can track down the issue, i hope its not the card :S

Edit, it seems to be heat related, it just happened again, 5 minutes after getting it up

It does sound very much like an overheating issue.

Are both fans spinning ok on the two GPUs?

May be worth ensuring the heatsik/fan combos are dust-free too, and that you get sufficient airflow through the Mirage case itself (does it have any case fans?).

All fans are spinning, but im wondering if the mediator pci module is giving off some heat right into the voodoo.

If the Voodoo is right next to the mediator bridgeboard, then airflow could be a problem - IIRR there isn't much room between the bridgeboard and the first PCI slot.

Maybe try the Voodoo in the next slot along, and see if that fixes the issue?
