Blizzard PPC problem
« on: May 21, 2008, 02:11:09 PM »
I recently picked up a Phase 5 Blizzard PPC 603e+, only to find it is DOA.  When I put the card in my 1200, the fan spins, but I get a black screen.  The Caps Lock light does not light up.  Is there anything I can check?

I have a newer upgraded power supply, and tested with an 030 and 060 without problems.

Maybe this would help you as it was posted on the news of amiga.org http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=47406

Probably needs a repair or something.

First: try to give more power to your motherboard.
BPPC are power-hungry.
So you must connect a floppy power connector from your power supply to the floppy power connector on your motherboard.
Generally BPPC become more stable.

Second:
check also your motherboard revision...
I know many BPPCs have serious problem with some rev. 1D4: for example my rev 1D4 doesn't start with my BPPC, getting a black screen like you.
So try your card with another motherboard.

If it doesn't start even giving more power or with other mobo revisions, then it's dead and you can try to repair it.
JJB at AmigaCenter is great for repairing BPPC cards.

I had to reset my A1200 a few times to get it to boot with my PPC card. And i used an AT PSU.

Tried cleaning the card and contacts, Motherboard rev is 1D1.  I tried removing the floppy, HD and CDRom and disconnecting the fan on the PPC board, and still nothing.

Resetting did not work, which was expected as the caps lock light does not even light.

One thing I did notice as that the chip beside the fan labled CY7C3741 was fairly hot after a short period of time.

am pretty sure l had my blizzard ppc working in the standred 1200 case when l orginallly got the replacment one .
athough it did sit in a tower most of its life so far.
make sure it coonected onto the 1200 mb securely oh and make sure the you have ram on the card and its fitted right.

have you tryed holding the esc key to get into the ppc early menu its exc or delete l forget.
it does sound like the card not working with those mbs though
with trying in standred 1200 your need a 500 brick or it wont work l dont think .
oh what kind of hard drive are you trying to use mine didnt work with a 2/12 ide on a ide apator or buffered ide card.

@ webmany

ok, no mobo revision issue... but did you try to give extra power to mobo with a floppy power connector?

I am altering a power supply to do this.  Is there some place I can read more on doing this?

Do both slots need to be filled, or can just one be?  Currently both are filled with 128Meg simms with an HP sticker on it.

Now I know why I liked Italy so much.  Feroz, you were right on.  Connected power to the floppy connector and the card is alive.

Thanks for all the help.
