hd install.....errr yer im a noob
« on: May 08, 2008, 12:52:03 AM »
hi all, sorry to bug folks with what is probably a simple question, but how do I get WB 3.1 on to my hard drive without an install disk. the WB manual says to boot from the install disk, but I don't have one as the Amiga I have was not shipped originally with a hard drive. Any ideas will help as I have no clue. I just started playing with this thing after not having an Amiga for more than 10 years. thanks

install disks over at amigakit > linkAmigakit

install disk has format/partition tool as well as workbench install scripts..

If you hd is already partitioned you could always copy the files manually as long as the hd is bootable.

the hard drive was bootable, until about a hour ago. now its not. and I can no longer see the contents. Thanks for the link, but is there anyway I can get this done today? I don't want to have to wait three weeks while my disk sits at customs

If you have the standard Workbench boot floppy then you can use that.  You don't need the install disk.

Just boot the system from the Workbench floppy disk and if the HD is working you should see its icon appear once WB has loaded and you can then access it and try to fix whatever the boot problem is.

Otherwise you will need some partitioning software to try and set the HD up again.

There used to be a good tutorial but that seems to be offline now.

I would just use HDInstTools from Aminet. You can load up your Workbench disk, mount PC0: from your Storage disk, and then access the program from a 720 kb disk formatted in your PC.

Download HDInstTools as well as LHA.run from www.aminet.net and put it on the PC formatted disk, and you should be able to bring the hdd up and running.

doctorq, I tried that but when I boot from the WB disk then put the storage disk in, click the PC0 icon it just asks for the WB disk back. I give it the put the formated disk in but it dose not recognize the PC0 disk. If I try again it says that PC0 is already mounted. I'm going to pull out my other 1200 and see if the same thing happens on that one.

If you are using a 1.44 MB disk as your PC0 disk it won't work.

Try formatting the disk on the Amiga and then put it in the PC.

The syntax is

format drive pc0: name whatever noicons

I don't think its a problem with the formating of the disk. The Amiga just does not want to mount the disk as PC0

tried that. it just asks for the WB disk and then says

object is not of the required type.

I only have one floppy drive for the Amiga will that matter?

You have to change disks when it ask you to, but otherwise it should work straight away.

Try copying PC0 to devs:dosdrivers on your WB disk, and reboot.

I must be missing something some place. Its not working

here is what I am doing step by step

I copied the PC0 icon to the DOSDrivers draw on the WB3.1 floppy
then booted with the WB 3.1
floppy open a shell window
type in format drive pc0: name whatever noicons
hit return

it replies with object is not of the required type.

it did not ask me to change disks this time
if i put the floppy to be formated in to the drive an icon DF0:???? pops up on the desktop. If i select it and choose format from the icons menu it asks for the wb disk. I insert it, the format window pops up but does not give me the option of choosing the pc0 device to format. I can only format DF0 to 880K.  Is there anything else I can try?
