Make CD and CD writers
« on: May 05, 2008, 06:35:59 PM »
Not sure if the problem is with the make CD program (now free to all Amiga users I notice) or with the CD Writer, but I cannot get my external Yamaha CRW8824S to write CDs with Make CD.
Every time I try, regardless of the speed I set in Make CD, the buffer runs out well before the CD is made and an error message appears.
I know from the Make CD website that this writer is not on their list of supported writers and I am wondering if the program simply will not work with it.
I am using a desktop Amiga 1200 with 3.1 ROMs, large HD and Blizzard accelerator and the CD writer is attached by Squirrel interface through the PCMCIA port.
 Can anyone help please?
 Regards,
         Mike.

You can try and increase buffers in MakeCD in its settings. I can't remember off the top of my head where to look for this setting, but it's there. This very well might help.

Try burning in TAO mode instead of DAO. I've got an extremely high-end setup and I still get buffer underruns with DAO.

Thanks, but none of the above work. I am already using TAO, I have increased the buffer to 26,000 and reduced the speed to 1 but the buffer still runs out well before any CD has been written.
 Any other suggestions please?
 Regards,
        Mike.

Do you burn from ISO or "on the fly"? I would suggest to try the first option.

I have used MakeCD to make backups of my system partition.  I found that it worked quite well if I did a burn in two steps.  The first step was to make an ISO image, which was stored on my hard drive.  The second step was to burn the ISO image to my burner.  I have a LiteOn DVD combo drive which can burn to CD-RW discs or CD-R discs.  The last few times I used another program called AmiDVD.  I follow the same procedure.

Is your Liteon drive SCSI or EIDE?  I have one of their CDRW EIDE drives that I have yet to use to write anything on the Amiga yet, but just downloaded MakeCD to try with it.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

@amigadave

EIDE.  This is on my MicroA1 running OS4, so hopefully I'm not leading anyone down the garden path.  For CD-RW, I found that I had the best results with "High Speed" CD-RW discs.  I also use "High Speed" CD-R discs, but have not tried as wide a variety of CD-R discs, so lower speed discs may be just fine.

Even though it is a 68K program MakeCD works beautifully on my machine on my OS4 workbench.

Sorry, still no joy. Please bear in mind my Yamaha CD writer is an external SCSI device connected through a Squirrel cable to the PCMCIA port on my desktop Amiga 1200.
I have an internal Lite-On CD writer in my towered A1200 set up which works just fine, but that is no consolation when I am trying to back up my Desktop A1200 HD.
 Regards,
        Mike.
