Can Toaster 3.1 diskettes be copied?
« on: May 01, 2008, 03:35:35 AM »
I just got a 2nd A2000 and this one has a Video Toaster 4000. I'm trying to make a backup of everything to the ADF format for backup copies.

The problem I have is that the first disk reads and converts ok, but the others only show up as NDOS disks and I can't read them.

I've tested the disks by installing to my other A2000 and everything installed and ran fine, so I know that the problem is not due to bad diskettes.

Anyone know why these won't read and is there a way to make an ADF copy. If they can't be copied, then can I make a copy of the completely installed Toaster 4000 drawer on the machine to use later if needed.

Thanks,

-JM

I don't know the answer to that yet, but I have read that a copy of the 4.3 Toaster software can be purchased from NewTek on CD-ROM for a very affordable price. I have a Toaster 2000 card on the way (with 4.1 software, I believe), and I am going to try to get the 4.3 CD from NewTek when I can get the serial number off the Toaster.

Nice score on that second 2000, by the way.

I've got a copy of 4.1 on CD, but I have not had the time to get the CD-Rom working on it yet. Also, it looks like the 4.1 does not include Lightwave.

You can actually get the latest version from Newtek for $35. They actually have Amiga's setup at their facility so they can answer Amiga Toaster questions.

You could try DMS pro version, or better: OWS, MFMWarp..
look on WHDload page. They mention ways of making backup copies of protected diskettes.
Better sorry than worry.

I would be surprised if that 4.1 CD does not have Lightwave on it.  It should be a complete installation for the Toaster and Lightwave is part of the Toaster software.

The best thing would be to  buy the 4.3 CD from NewTek which is the last version and does have version 5.0 of Lightwave on it.  That is the last version of Lightwave for the Amiga.

I think it is great that NewTek still sells it and apparently still fixes broken Toasters and Flyer cards subject to availability of parts.

I still have a Flyer card for sale if anyone is interested.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

I'm just guessing on the 4.1 not having Lightwave. I won't know for sure until I've got the CD going in the A2000, but when I popped the disc in the laptop there are no folders/files under the Lightwave directory. They could store them elsewhere though.

I'll try the other suggestions on copying the disks and will give the CD another try this weekend.

@jlmjr1957

You can create DMS images of the disks, it doesn't matter if they show as NDOS. I did this myself, the first disk is a DOS valid diskette as it's the one you need to open to start the toaster installer, the other ones are in a special format that only the toaster installer recognizes. Be aware that some of the disks are High Density, so you will need a high density floppy drive to read those and you will need to use the 'HD' switch in DMS when creating the dms images of those. The toaster installaton software comes in 45 disks, of which 16 are high density (30 to 45).

Hope that helps,

Dragster

Edit: The above was meant for toaster disks version 4.x... 3.1 could be a bit different, maybe less disks, or no high density disks. The rest should apply the same!
