060 on A3640, is it possible?
« on: April 24, 2008, 02:42:43 PM »
Just curious if a 68060 CPU will work on a A3640 without too much hassle? Would be an ideal upgrade for my A4k if it can be done.

I think there was an 040 > 060 adapter on the market a few years back which may work, however as it cost around £100 per unit it's probably not worth it.

Can't seem to find a link to it at the moment though.
Mac Mini G4 (1.5GHz, 64MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.6
Powerbook 5.8 (15", 1.67GHz, 128MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.8.

Windows-free since 2011-2014 (Damn you Netflix!)

I got a quote on the adapter about 6 months ago. it was about $600 USD. I figured it would be cheaper just to buy a full 060 accelerator...

There is only 2 adapters for A3640 that I know to work.

XCalibur, which adds FAST RAM and 33MHz 040
Quaddoubler, 50MHz 040 (can be used with XCalibur)

Both cost more than a WarpEngine 040 or Apollo 4040

The A3640 really is a POS though, cripples the 040. If that is all you've ever used in your Amiga, you've not lived.

Even if you put a 68060 on an A3640 by converting voltage to 3.3V, the Amiga won't like it because 68060 requires some "setup" at boot time.
I do have an ongoing project for building an adapter with some ROM on it but University doesn't leave much free time to me :(

Thanks for the info, I thought it was worth quickly asking but not to worry.
