What exactly do you need for Amiga XL??
« on: October 20, 2002, 03:08:52 AM »
Greetings Amigans!

I was curious to what exactly do you need installed on your PeeCee to run Amiga XL.  I was told that you need QNX installed.  How and where do I do this QNX? Where is their download site?  Thanks. :-)

Or just use the QNX-CD that comes with AmigaOSXL  :-P

But seriously; Why would anybody want to run AmigaXL when
Amithlon or WinUAE offer a far better solution ?
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

Then I'm afraid AmigaXL would be even slower. The speed scale, from slowest to fastest, is this:

Fellow (or WinFellow)
AmigaXL
WinUAE-JIT
Amithlon

@kd7ota

If your serious about Amiga emulation and speed
maybe you should try amithlon.

I have a 750mhz AMD athlon, geforce 2 mx 400 AGP, and 256mb of ram.  AMithlon & AmigaXL both
really fly on this machine!!

Depends on your needs and how you have configured your UAE. Im sitting here on a 333 Mhz k6-2. And im experiencing... Well... Decent speed. Enough until I can get my hands on a Aone atleast

Have you tried to boot the pc with the disc image
available at amithlon.com/net?  It may help to
see if there are any driver problems before you
go thru the torment of setting up  a linux boot
loader.  Some folks prefer XL over Amithlon,
including myself,  I really am fascinated by those
who say WinUAE is faster than XL??  I can count
the icons as they load into WB, whereas in XL the
sys partition loads all the icons "splat" at once.

I can publish benchmark results obtained on the same hardware if you like, as well as give you technical reasons why WinUAE is faster, and why Amithlon is faster still.

The thing about WinUAE is that it supports lots and lots of configurations, and it is easy to end up with a sub-optimal environment. Once you've set it up properly, WinUAE is faster than AmigaXL.

Well AmigaXL is faster on that when it uses FFS-partions,
something WinUAE only learned in the latest version.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.

Thanks for all of your info guys.  I was trying to fix the BIOS on my Asus motherboard, and If I fixed it, i would have bought an Athlong CPU for it.  I need a board that has the Award Bios to do the trick on repairing my Asus board.  I will have to look into Amithlon and check things out.  I will also have to download WinUAE and get the latest version and check things out. THANKS AGAIN! :-)

I am very happy running Amiga_XL.

I have two machines here which contain Abit
KX7-333 RAID mobos. One has an Athlon 2200+
with 764MB of DDR 333Mhz RAM, TNT2 RIVA PRO
32MB, 3Com 10/100 Ethernet card, Soundblaster
soundcard, etc.

These Abit mobos are great mobos. They are no
frills, built to very high quality standards,
are overclockable as hell, and their BIOS is
very powerful especially for overclockers. They
are rated #5 on motherboards.org, and would be
rated higher if they had onboard sound and an
onboard LAN. However, myself and many other people
do not find these things features. I consider it
as being a feature if the mobo doesn't contain this
crap. The mobos have 1 AGP slot, 6 PCI slots, USB,
two high speed seiral ports and one parallel port,
and PS/2 connectors. Again I consider the lack of
onboard sound, video, CNR slots a very big plus.
In light of that these Abit mobos are fantastic.
I have read numerous reports that state using onboard
sound will take as much as 40fps off a game. It is
much better to add the video, sound, and ethernet
of your choice. I would recommend this mobo to anyone
without hesitation.

The other has an Athlon 2400+ 1GB DDR 333Mhz RAM,
GeForce 2 Titanium, Audigy Sound card, 3Com ethernet,
etc.

Amiga_XL flys on both of these machines, and running
on QNX provides a rock solid base for Amiga_XL.

I have also tried WinUAE JIT on these machines and
I cannot tell one bit of difference in speed between
it and Amiga_XL. Again Amiga_XL is ungodly fast on
both of these machines, but I do not see any gain
in real world test on thing like ImageFX, Alladin4D,
Candy Factory Pro, etc, between Amiga_XL and WinUAE.

Both of these machines are lightening fast with Amiga_XL
and I am very happy with the performance. Again I see
no real world difference in WinUAE.

Amithlon may be slightly faster, however I've never
tried it. I own the AmigaOS_XL CD but have yet to
try Amithlon. At this point in time it seems like it
is a hassle to get up and running, there are problems
with sound and other various issues that I keep reading
about. Now, Amithlon may indeed be faster, for me
at this point in time I don't feel that I need anything
faster, because these machine burn using Amiga_XL.

I may one day try Amithlon, but the ease of installing
AmigaXL is unbelievable and does not contain the hassles
surrounding Amithlon. I'm not bashing Amithlon as I
probably will wind up installing it at some point
in time, all I'm saying is that I really like Amiga_XL,
on these machines it is blazingly fast, and QNX is
rock solid as compared to Windows and IMHO provides
a much better and solid base for the emulation.

Both of these machines were build to be completely
compatible with Amithlon, with the exception of the
3Com 10/100 ethernet. Once I installed Amiga_XL
and saw the blazingly fast speed, personally I did
not feel the need to fool with Amithlon at this point
in time.

I'm very happy with Amiga_XL, and I hope they will
continue to develop this product! I would like to
stress again that I'm not bashing Amithlon in any
form or shape. It is a fantastic product and I'm sure
it is getting better all the time, but the point
is that I'm very happy with Amiga_XL on these two
machines.

I would also like to add that I feel WinUAE was
setup on these machines as optimal as possible.
Is it fast? Yes, very fast, but it is not any faster
than Amiga_XL based on the real world test I have
done using ImageFX, Arteffect 4, Candy Factory Pro,
Aladdin 4D, etc. The speeds are just about identical.

regards,
When you open Windows... you let in bugs!

2 Amiga A3000Ts, 3 Amiga A3000s, 2 Amiga A2000s, CD32 w/SX-1 Expansion, 3 Amiga_XL machines, an Athlon 2200+ an Athlon 2400+, and an Athlon64 3400+. Also many...
