The applet used on this site is able to play original Amiga IFF ANIM files directly, you don't need to convert your files.
It plays ANIM-5, ANIM-7, ANIM-8 and ANIM-J codecs and supports all Amiga display modes (OCS, ECS and AGA). You can download
ANIMApplet for free and use it for your own web projects.
ANIM files can be compressed (zipped) to reduce loading time. With this technique the clips will load almost immediately, like Flash movies. The zipped ANIMs you may find at the bottom of each page is actually the file the applet is playing.
BTW the applet can even handle the 'Pingpong' mode of ancient ANIM-J files. Check this out:
