Kickstart 1.3 ROM in Amiga 500, what can it do?
« on: April 16, 2008, 04:10:12 PM »
Hi all, I'm about to set my Amiga up again.

Didn't know whether to post as "software" or "hardware".

Anyways, I have an Amiga 500 with the 1mb clock card, and I have a spare kickstart 1.3 chip. What can this little beastie do, and what is the reason for a 1.3 chip?

Is it kinda like windoze needing XP rather than win98 to run newer software?

Thanks.

Kickstart 1,3 allows booting from an external harddrive.

If you have a spare 1.3 chip, then my guess would be that the Kickstart in your A500 was upgraded at some point, and the spare 1.3 chip is the one which was taken out.

I agree with motorollin, since 1.2 ROM Amigas don't accept ROM upgrades very well.

Open the A500 and see what ROM version you have. I bet you have some sort of 2.0x on it.

Easy to check: power up your Amiga connected to a TV or monitor with no diskette inside the unit and look at the initial screen.

If 1.2 or 1.3, a "hand" appears with the ROM version on the disk figure held.

If 2.0x the boot screen is totally different! You'll see a disk drive on the right and the exact ROM version on the left. Normal range is 37.199 to 37.350 . The higher version, the better, although A500 don't accept IDE HD inside (not without a custom, DIY, IDE controller).
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

Yes, it has the "hand" icon. But maybe it's a later chip I have spare. I bought a keyboard from ebay to replace mine, after trying to troubleshoot a rebooting problem. I ended up paying the guy a bit extra, so he sent me the chip as well. Maybe it's a 3.1 chip? all I remember is that it's either "1.3" or "3.1". Correct me if I'm wrong.

Sorry guys, yes, it's a 1.3 kickstart chip. The one in my '500 is a stock chip.

Well, that could be - 3.1? Which would be great news. About 1.3 roms you could expect:

• The bug in AutoConfig was fixed

• Memory autoconfig was added; "addmem" commands no longer needed - THIS WAS A BIG IMPROVEMENT - NO SOFTWARE NEEDED

• The recoverable RAM: drive was called "RAMB0:"

• Autoboot from hard drive, and other non-DF0 media (except CD-ROMs)

• Addition of the Shell

My A1000 has 3.1 roms, works great and OS 3.1 is the best, quickest Amiga OS for a 68K (that Commodore made).

C= Didn't make the 3.1 Workbench! It was sold only with Escom Amigas!

The only C= 3.1 system was the CD32, and it came without any WB disk, since it was a game machine (console).

The other information is absolutely correct.

Sorry for the nitpicking...

I knew the bug with autobooting hard disks but I don't know that autoconfig bug... could you provide a wider explanation please (I didn't know a bug existed on OS1.3 with autoconfig).

Memory autoconfig already worked on OS1.3. If your memory board is autoconfigurable you won't require any addmem command. I have seen that working with 030 accelerators so I'm not sure about what you are talking about.

OS3.9's setpatch command included a parameter to add non-autoconfig memory so you did not have to use addmem but that's different.

• Addition of the Shell

IIRC OS1.3 included a Shell, probably on the "System" drawer.

C= definitely did create Kickstart and Workbench 3.1. It was ready for release at the time of bankruptcy but not widely available.

If you boot a stock A1200 with 3.1 ROMs and a WB3.1 disk, the (c) message states "(c) 1985-1993 Commodore-Amiga, Inc.".

And there are numerous examples on the web such as this that refer to C= regarding 3.1.

   Correct.

Escom built nothing. They did put their name on stuff though.

Here is some pretty thorough 1.3 information I think:
1.3 sounds like the true beginning. I do remember 1.1 and 1.2, loading KickStarts, floppy swapping all the time. Don't miss those days.
