Problems installing Maxtor 80GB HDD on A4000 with OS3.5
« on: April 12, 2008, 12:32:03 PM »
Hi folks,

I'm having diffs trying to install a :-
 Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 89GB ATA/133 HDD on a A4000 DT with OS3.5.

I currently have a 4GB HDD connected as my master which is partitioned into 1GB units (from earlier version of OS) and includes a OS3.5 boot partition. When I try to connect the 80GB drive as slave it is not recognized at all ie HDToolbox doesn't see it. The only way I can get the 80GB recognized is by disconnecting my 4GB drive and booting from OS3.1 floppies but then I can only see it as a4GB drive!

Any one any ideas, I'm just using the standard Amiga IDE I/F nothing fancy like a fast ATA I/F. Although I do have a CD drive connected via a Zorro TandemCD+IDE I/F which I have not tried out ... will have a go and see what happens. Still appreciate any ideas though,
Ian

I think you will be far better of with something like IDE'99 I use this then rebooted and I then can see any other HD on my system then use HDToolbox to set it up.
BUT having said that I to also have the 4 way IDE board.

Hi,
your old drive doesn't like at all.Try to find on Maxtor/Seagate site about "non ATA compatible drive" jumper mode.
Keep the Faith !
VG 5000/A1000/500/500+/600/2000/CDTV/1200PPC-GREX/1200PPC -ATEO-BV/4060D/CD32/Aone/Peg 1/Peg2 G4/ various funny machines too  :-) http://www.mo5.com/collection/index.php?pseudo=CLS2086

Any one any ideas,

Boot from your 4GB drive and create an OS 3.5 emergency disk. Then connect the 80GB drive and boot from the emergency disk.

Note that you need the CD drive for this to work.

Bye,
Thomas

Other idea is getting more information from your old HD. Some units have strange behaviour with slaves attached without some jumper setting.
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

Thanks for all the feedback on this,

some findings and confoundings :-

1. The 4G drive turns out to be a FUJITSU MPA3043ATU drive (4.37G)and only have some limited info on jumper settings, when connected on its own it works fine as a master drive.

2. Nice suggestion from Thomas re the creation of and emergency 3.5 floppy, did that and after having to copy over a tandemat.device file manually finally got that to work ... but
although HDToolbox (off the 3.5 emergency floppy) initially recognized the Maxtor 80G as a Maxtor 6Y0080L0 drive with 76.3G capacity after "Install" I went to the "Partition" option and here it displayed disk as 76.3G but only allowed me to manipulate partition sizes within a 20.3G limit!!
NOTE all this was done with only the Maxtor drive connected to the A4000.

3. Any attempt to connect the two drives in any combination of master/slave either results in neither drive being recognized (i.e. Please insert WB 3.1 icon) or the 4G drive being recognized.

4. Only reference I could find about non ATA compatible drive jumpering appeared to relate to Segate rather than Maxtor drives.

Each drive only appears to work as a Master, I guess that is why I can only connect one at a time?
Anyone any ideas why I'm only able to work with 20G rather than the drive capacity of 76G on the Maxtor?

thanks again for yr help and suggestion sto date,

Ian
