Help with WHDLoad and Mediator
« on: April 08, 2008, 11:24:52 AM »
I cannot get any WHDLoad image that requires a ROM to work on my A1200.  I'm using WHDLoad 16.8 and it is registered.  I'm using the ROMS from Amiga Forever 2006 ISO and have moved and renamed the ROMs in DEVS:Kickstarts.  I did not install Amiga Forever.

My A1200 has the following hardware:

Mediator SX / Voodoo3 and Ethernet
Blizzard IV 030 50mhz + SCSI, 64MB Ram
Subway USB, clockport
OS 3.9, no boing bags

WHDLoad starts fine and displays the splash screen with my registration info.  The screen then goes black and the games never come up.  I can hit the exit key and return to workbench without any problems.   I've tried using the NoCache, NoMMU, and VooDooInit=NO flags with no success.  Games that don't need ROMS work fine.

Thanks for the help!
Bubba

Do you have the rom.key installed in the DEV:Kickstart directory?

Quote
supports also the kickstart images supplied with Cloantos Amiga
Forever CDs, kick130.rom or amiga-os-130.rom must be renamed to
      kick34005.A500, kick310.rom or amiga-os-310.rom renamed to
kick40068.A4000, images together with the rom.key must be
installed under DEVS:Kickstarts, some older installs require a
kick40068.A1200 image these installs wont run with Cloantos roms

The Amiga Forever ROM's are "encrypted" and WHDLoad needs this key.

If I remember correctly from another thread, the Amiga Forever ROMs have some encryption that stop them from working with WHDLoad, or even writing back to a chip to work in a real Amiga. Someone else here may need to verify that, as I'm not entirely certain.

WHDLoad has supported Amiga Forever ROM's (with key) since 16.5

Don't throw a brick on me for saying this but...

Are you playing the games outputing the VGA signal from Voodoo3 on a VGA monitor only?

I don't think it is the roms, Whdload usually throws up a dialog telling you the rom is missing...

He said that games which don't need ROMS work fine. That says to me he's gotta be using a scan doubler and a monitor switcher or something similar.

Yes, I have the rom.key in devs:kickstarts.  I did not install Amiga Forever, I just copied the roms from the iso image.  I assume I don't need to install it.

Yes you dont install anything. Copy over ROM's + ROM key, rename, get appropriate PAT & RTB files from skick

If all that is done, I am stumped.

What is the ToolType VooDooInit? I've never come across that one. No mention in the WHDload docs.

What is your video setup like?

How is Amiga Native gfx displayed?

Scandoubler + switcher?
Dual input Monitor?
Two monitors?
Composite to TV input?
LCDTV?

Is there no chance that you are just "looking at the wrong screen"?

I have a cypress CM-348S scan converter.  I'm staring Whdload from an AGA screen not from a voodoo screen.  This works fine for games that don't require roms.

I've tried many settings with no luck:  nommu, nocache, etc.  I found the VoodooInt reference via googling, but I think it applies to an older version of whdload.

My next thought is that it's some hardware issue.  I am using a wireless keyboard connected to a Lyra adapter.  I had a probelm with a wireless mouse where one game would freeze.  It worked fine with a regular mouse.  I'm going to try a wired keyboard and see if it improves the situation.
Thanks for the help.

Update...

I booted with the start-up sequence disabled and whdload works!  Now I've got to figure out what's causing the problem.

Eh, the VoodooInt isn't a tooltype for WHDLoad, so it will bring you nothing. VoodooInt is an ENV setting you find in ENVARC:Mediator. It should be set to no for WHDLoad on Mediator systems.
