I advise against calling your boot device "System", for obvious reasons...

a) There is normally a drawer inside SYS: that is already called System (you'll find Format in there, amongst a few other things)

b) If you try fiddling with the Resident command, you will find that there is a part of the internals called SYSTEM

This makes for possible confusion, at least for me if not for the machine. That is why I don't like naming a drive "System:" as I don't like the idea of having to type "System:System/command"
:)

Hehehe... Indeed, you'll have to first open a Command Shell. This can be done from 'execute command..' by typing newshell or newcli.

Then, from within that Command Shell you can use the 'info' trick and typing the device you want to dive into.
Get a SAM, while you can! The new AMIGA is here!

Ok  ..so a different window...will try where i can get...typed it in as it should be but nothing really opens up----guess in this shell thing its all text based or do folders really gonna open up???

Can't boot from a disk drive cause got a 3.5 cd which was installed on the A1200 when i got it...and only installed the idefix to get a cd rom working.can i connect the cd rom directly to the ide port to boot up?then i could set jumpers to the sys boot drive to slave and fix it?

The Shell window is indeed for text input/output. It is a Command Line Interface, hence CLI, so no icons in there.

Yes it's text based. Typing DIR should showup the directories within.

P.S. Have you tried uninstalling IDEFix Express and see if that gets you back on the right track  :rtfm:

What disk is it asking for?

And unless 3.5 is waaay different from 3.0, there is no sys:presets ...

Try "SYS:Prefs/" followed by "Dir" and see what happens, you should see Env-Archive/ in there (this has been mentioned earlier)

If all that is too much typing, then just type "ENVARC:" and that should put you directly into the right place to start deleting/renaming your wrong preferences settings. (Of course, this presumes that you have booted successfully from your hard disk.)

You could try "Delete #? ALL" ... that will clear the whole lot

But I recommend going into "sys/" first and looking at things before you do anything too drastic.

You could try the following

rename sys to oldsys

then do a cold reboot and see how that goes.

It will destroy you preference settings though
