Hard drive problem??
« on: April 06, 2008, 11:41:14 PM »
Hi there,
Long time no see! :(

Well after starting to play with my Amiga 1200 this evening, I was trying to transfer some data from my PC across to my Amiga.
Now since I had bought a PCMICA network adaptor that allows me to connect to my switch/router, its made my life easy as heck to get game patches and so on across to the Amiga, saves the floppy disk problems...

My only problem is that I'm trying to partition my hard drive and HDToolBox seems to crash when opening the program up.  I thought this would be a certain replacement or am I going over the top?
Reason I'm posting very late and very very late for a bid is that I have just found a 60Gb 2.5" hard drive (new and sealed) on Ebay for myself...  Is it worth a bid or should I just re-format my Amiga's hard drive and go from there?

Nearly forgot too, its a Fujitsu MHV2060AT.. Is it worth a go?

Please help!! :)

Without 3.1Roms and OS3.9 you could be limited on the size of your hard drive

I've got a 40GB in my 4000D and had a lot of trouble setting it up until I stuck 3.1Roms in it and installed OS3.9   :-)

You could have to install SFS file system etc to get yours running to its full capacity  :rtfm:

Have a look on other threads for Hard drives bigger than 4GB

There's a good thread on EAB about hard drives greater than 4GB.

Have a look here http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=32256

I've just found a 20Gb 2.5" drive on Ebay for £14 including postage, would it be worth a go?  I dont know if it is the drive as its been working fine over the past couple of hours..  Its just that program that seems to hang :(

I cant remember what size is in there at the moment, I think its a 4Gb if not bigger...

What size am I limited to with 3.1 Roms and 3.1 Workbench?  I assume the standard 1200's PSU would be able to handle the drive alright??

Thanks for the reply :)

Many thanks again :)

I'm in the UK too

I bought a PC Laptop drive hoping to fit it in a 1200 but the connections aren't the same. The 1200 IDE connector lead I had wouldn't fit it  :-?

You'd better make sure before you buy it

You can use a bigger drive in your 1200 but without applying the required patches you may only be able to see the first 8GB of it.

If your in the UK too, we are both mad!!  I've gotta get up for 6:30am!!

I aint worried, I dont really use it that much so £14 isnt gonna break the bank for me :)

I've no way of finding out if it fits or not have I? I thought all 2.5" IDE drives where the same?  They must had a standard surely...

I'll give it a go :)  Its not gonna matter to much :)  Most importantly, I'll check the drive thats already in there first!!

Are there any hard drive programs that I can use to find out whether or not there is a problem?

I get an extra hour in bed compared to you - so that means I can stop up an hour later  ;-)

You need to find out what you've got in there already and if you're not bothered about what's on the drive at the minute - try and re-install it and see if that helps.

I also thought that all IDE drives where the same. But the one I got was from a laptop and the connector on the drive was smaller than the ribbon I had. So I assume all laptop harddrives are the same.

I'm on the hunt for my Workbench 3.1 disks at the moment!! :)  I think on my Amiga OS 3.5 there is a copy of Workbench 3.1 anyways, but as I'm formatting the lot anyways, I'll make a note of whats what and go from there :)

I can connect it to any of the 3 PC's in the house so I'm hoping it'll connect to something after its formatted!!

I'll note the drive model etc down and see if I can find another, if not, the 20Gb one from Ebay should do the trick :)  I know my Amiga doesnt use the same as my server does so there's no need to have 8 hard drives in that!!

I've typed this once and my PC threw it away

Why not stick ClassicWB on it?

It comes with loads of extras already installed  :-)

Have a look here http://classicwb.abime.net/

I've never heard of ClassicWB so that's why I've not thought about installing it!!

Pc's have that tendency to throw things away...  At the moment I've benchmarking mine and trying to break a few speed records ;)  Its fine when it works, but god its a nightmare when it doesnt :(  But then what do you expect??  Its a PC with MS on it!!

I'm downloading them all just to make sure I got one I think suits me! :)

My buggers got a virus I can't get rid off - bluddy things :getmad:

I keep attacking my own PC and trying to send stuff off to a web address :madashell: Thank God in one way for Norton.

It's got until the weekend and then I'm going to rebuild it.

Amigas are a lot easier - ClassicWBLite works great on a non expanded Amiga.

What you got shoved in yours?

Sorry I've not replied sooner, I've been transfering games from PC to Amiga and trying to get it to work!! :)  Also trying to get my PC to stay stable enough to run a few of the 3D Mark programs that I use...  Damn thing!!  Thank god for water cooling tho!!

I've not used Norton in ages!!  Ever since 2003 come to think about it!!  I used it thinking it would help speed up a PC game (GTA 3 I think comes to mind) but I think I just went out and bought better hardware!

I'm just transfering over what is required for my Amiga and then I might get to bed, but I dont think its gonna be an early one for some reason!! :(  Still these things happen..

My Amiga 1200 is a little Gem :D  Its only mildly upgraded, has a Blizzard 030 50Mhz unit and I think 16Mb of ram inside with a 3.2Gb Toshiba (I found out what it was... and now also as I've formatted the drive, its working fine so I dont really need the new hard drive thats coming, but such is life!) and thats it really...

I used to have a PPC 603e+ with 128Mb 8mb BVision and so on, but sadly, I went to turn it on one day and it blew up..  I have been from that day onwards, searching for the Ultimate Amiga and I'm sad to say, I've yet to find one.  I've been with PC's ever since sadly...

I've got a good few Amigas.

I'm busy sorting out a recent acquisition from an Fleabayer!!!!

A4000D that was sold as perfect and took me a while to find out the sound is stuffed from leaking caps and battery.

I've nearly got it sorted. Just got to replace the caps now

I've always wanted a A4000T but I've never managed to find one at the right price...  Nor come to think of it the right spec either!!

I'm still trying to sort out my new PC hardware I got Friday..  Been tweaking it for ages, now its just a case of finding a sweet spot and enjoying it :)

Just won an external floppy drive for my Amiga 1200 so I'm looking forward to that coming along with the 'new' 20Gb drive I've bought :)
I saw a 80Gb model go for just £14 this morning!!  :-o  :-o

Well its late again, but I'm happy cos all my games are on the Amiga from my PC and I cant complain about that :)
