A1200 Power supply problems
« on: August 08, 2003, 09:56:22 AM »
My 60 Watt PSU has problem to power my Amiga 1200 with 2GB notebook HD, Blizzard 1260 with 128 MB of ram and a SCSI-kit.

The PSU has to turn on and off twice before the power led light up.

If I use the same PSU with my other Amiga 1200 with 1 GB HD, Blizzard 1230 IV with 48 MB of RAM and SCSI-kit then it works directly.

How do I fix this problem?

At the main time I use my weaker A500 PSU.

I am thinking your PSU cannot supply all of the power it needs for your whole Amiga. I know you have to have like a Bigfoot one like I have.

Buying a bigger PSU is better. And for your floppy drive, have it connected to the new PSU if you get one. I think a case solution would solve all of your problems.

If someone thinks its someething else, please correct me.

I'm pritty sure the A500 only have a 50W PSU. Anyway, I got an almost identic setup (A1200, B1260+extra coolingfan, Scandoubler, Melody1200Pro, external diskdrive, A500PSU). The problem is that the PSU isn't powerfull enough to drive all of the Amiga and you realy need to change the PSU before you burn the one you got (I've already aquiered a 230W and is thinking of plunder the original A1200 PSU for it's power connector).

I got the same problem as you got with it sometimes going on without any hickups (usually when it's been off for like over night) else it needs to power upp the conds and stuff first (takes a sec) then turning the computer off and waiting for about 0.5 sec the HD led will light up a little and then is when you turn on the puter again. ;) It's a recepie for killing the computer and/or extra addons so find a better PSU as soon as possible.

Ps. If I try to connect anything else like a CD, the SurfSquirrel, a PCMCIA Ethernet card it won't start at all so I'm at the edge of what my PSU can handle before giving upp... 2H into use it's almost so hot one can't touch it. :-D

Also, you may want to open your A1200 and see what revision it is.

Go to http://amiga.emugaming.com/qa.html and search for the section I have heard that some A1200's have problems with PowerPC cards. How do I know if my Amiga will have problems and how can it be fixed?"

I had a similar problem with my CSA 12 Gauge fitted.  Would only turn on around 1 in 10 goes.  Then I did the mod (for Rev 1.D.4 which I have) and all is good, running on standard A500 PSU

I tried my Blizzard 1260 in two Amiga 1200's. A Commodore 1d4 and an Escom 1d4? I am using an A500 PSU without problems. When I use it with the 60 Watt PSU, it won't work. If I put my old Blizzard 1230 IV in these machines with the 60 Watt PSU, it will work immediately.

I will consider the fix you told me.
