Help needed on reinstalling from scratch
« on: March 24, 2008, 05:05:08 PM »

=======
Please start reading from this post:

As what's in this first post already has been resolved. Thanks.

=======

After a long time I decided to reinstall my Amiga 4000 as the original harddrive doesn't work anymore.
Unfotunatly I'm unable to find all disks that came with it so I'm a little stuck now.

What I've managed to do is:

Boot install 3.1 and setup the 1st partition of the harddisk, format it and install WB 3.1

Downloaded the drivers for the Cyberstorm/Cyberscsi that is in my A4000 and installed them.

So far so good, it also comes with CDFS on the disk. When I run the SCSI utility it recognises the CD-ROM drive but I can't get it to work, although CD0: is mounted (but on CLI it can't find it), it does react to EJECT, START and STOP from this tool.

How can I get the CD-ROM to work in order to install OS 3.9

Any help is welcome! Thanks!

OK, here we go I would have to belive you might have some kind of conflict with your scsi controller. Check that out first termination ect.

I have had many miggy's and they all have their on problems ie.. A4000D,A3000D,A2000D and A500. I also have had a MK III cyberstorm and that was nice in my A4000. I had many config  problems with that 4000 ;so I sold it.

I would test the cdrom out also but most likely it is good. Check to see where all your drives are on the scsi chain and you can check each drive by disconnecting it from the others. If all you have is the cdrom on the scsi and the hard drive on IDE then you should not have any problem. What drives do you have on each controller?

CDFS could also be the problem I can't remember but I do recall having some problems getting cd's to read and drive to mount.Check your user start up and you should see the mounting script in it.

Fond it, IDEFix does the job (I thought this was only for IDE).

So now getting the stuff to install, when I run into something new I'll let you know.

By the way: is it possible to install OS 3.9 directly over WB 3.1? When I try INSTALLER it says it can't find a disk with 40MB free and RAM doesn't work...

You are using Amithlon (AmigaOSXL). That's for PC only.

Get a real Amiga OS 3.9 CD. It will allow you to create a boot disk with which you don't even need 3.1 any more. You can install 3.9 directly on an empty partition.

Thomas

Hmm ok, actually the install of 3.9 went OK until the harddisk went broken, but I have some spare ones.

I do have the original 3.5 and 3.9 disks, but as all my other disks they're lost and I already spent 2 days searching :(

This is really annoying as it also has original (legal) registered versions of MUI, iBrowse, Miami Deluxe, MagicWB and so on. Really good software I got with this A4000, but I have no clue where those disks are.

So I have to do with what I have stored on the pc...

Finally managed to find my OS 3.9 CD, this is the correct one.

So I formatted the harddrive, installed 3.1 but then it crashes. When I remove the startup-sequence lines about addbuffers on df0: and failat 21 and the other line then it boots fine.

So I installed IDEFix, it also works fine.
Booted up, loaded the installation of OS 3.9 and made the Emergency disk.
When I boot the Emergency disk it crashes (black screen, stops loading, after a while a guru appears).

So then I decided to install 3.9 from the cd while in 3.1, but the same result: booting lets it crash. Booting with no startup-sequence does work, but it can't find certain libraries (like workbech v44) to startup certain tools (like amidock).

Is this because of all the stuff that's in the Amiga and has no drivers installed yet?

There is a Cyberstorm + CyberSCSI MKII installed with an 68060, Multifacecard III, Ariadne II, Cybervision64 and a whole lot of memory (about 8mb or 16mb on the motherboard itself in 1 module and 128mb on the Cyberstorm).

Any ideas?

Have you tried installing it without all those expansions?

I imagine that they certainly could be the source of problems, but not having a 4000 I couldn't say for sure. It certainly won't hurt your system to try a barebones install, then add each card one at a time.

That was actually the last thing to try, maybe I should install some drivers on 3.1 first before upgrading to 3.9?

Do not remove anything from startup-sequence ! Delete 68040.library from the libs directory and install the libraries which came with your 68060 board.

Then make a new emergency disk and make sure that the 060 libraries are copied to it.

Get the latest libs from here: http://powerup.amigaworld.de/index.php?lang=en&page=13

That site doesn't contain any drivers for my cards, so I guess I can pick them from here:

http://amiga.resource.cx/expansion.html

?

It does. The very first file, "System Disk" is for all Phase5 and DCE 060 accelerators.

Your link only has very old versions. And if you compare, it has the same versions for MK2 and MK3/PPC.

Ok I got it and now everything worked fine except for lots of write errors on my harddisk on certain blocks. I don't understand why, maybe the harddisk is too fast? It's a 80GB 7200rpm IDE drive. I only used the 1st 4GB so far as Work: drive.

Or is this harddisk just broken?
When I press Retry I don't get the error again, but later it comes back on another block.

I'm thinking about building in a 2,5" harddisk with a converter cable as this doesn't take as much space, makes less noise (because I don't have to cool it) and keeps cooler.

Try to reduce the MaxTransfer value for all partitions. (HDToolbox / Partition Drive / Change...) Try 0x1fe00 and if it still fails, try 0xfe00.

Try to increase the number of buffers for each partition (HDToolbox / Partition Drive / bottom left). Use 25 buffers per 100 MB, but not less than 80.

Try to increase the file system block size of each partition (HDToolbox / Partition Drive / Change... / right side). Try 1024 or 2048 bytes per block. Note that you have to reformat the partition after changing the block size.

Thomas

At least I now have a good Emergency disk, so reformatting is no problem.

I'll try this but I guess doing this every time will cost a lot of time. First MaxTransfer, reformat, reinstall, if it fails the next thing..

So I guess I can do the three things in once?

Thanks!
