So... What's the current state of the Amiga?
« on: March 20, 2008, 03:48:34 PM »
I've not followed things for a while. The last time I was actively following things was when the Amiga One was in production and OS4 was in development. Then there was some kind of lawsuit and lots of gnashing of teeth and everything seemed to go to hell in a hand basket. Where do things stand now from a hardware and OS standpoint? Is Hyperion still actively developing OS4? Is someone at least trying to get hardware out there? Is anyone porting OS4 to the x86 platform (I know, that's akin to blasphemy, but the PPC is, for all intents and purposes, dead)?

As for what I've been doing in the interim, I've got a Linux box (been fiddling with Linux for about 10 years now), a Windows box (:shudder:) for gaming but it's serving mostly as a media server at the moment, and a MacBook (best of *nix coupled with a really nice UI). I still miss my Miggy, though. I do have a CD32 that's still up and running, though. So I'm not completely detached from the Amiga world.

Thanks,
Sam

OS4 development is on-going despite the continuing legal saga. Supposedly there is work on getting more hardware supported, but with the lawsuit(s) going, I doubt that we'll hear more about that. The only people who could port OS4 to x86 are those with access to the source-code; AFAIK, they're all working on improving the OS, rather than migrating to a different CPU.

There's lots of other posts that discuss this, but basically all you need to know is:

* AmigaOS 4 is still being developed for A1 and Classic.
* Hyperion can't release OS4 for other systems (e.g. Sam440) until the court case is finished.

So for now if you want to run the latest incarnation of OS4 your only options are classic (if you can find a PPC accelerator and have a second mortgage available to you) or A1 (ditto).

The sooner we get OS 4 on other hardware the better. In the meantime I'd look at AROS as that's progressing nicely, and does run on hardware like the SAM if you don't want to use a PC.

And if they lose, they won't be able to release it for anything at all ever again.

Much like my A4000, it's currently sitting on a shelf, collecting dust while waiting for someone to have enough resources to repair it.

Nice. Thanks for the succinct update, guys. Exactly what I was looking for. I wish all of this stuff would get resolved more quickly.

assuming Amiga means the Amiga Operative System:

Then it is being held hostage by On one side Hyperion who has developed the newest version (far beyond the specs of their contract with Amiga Inc.) and Amiga Inc who wants full control and hyperion to fork it over.

in order to port it to new hardware, Someone will need a hardware license from Amiga Inc which they won't give (no new h/w-license from A.Inc since the Amigaone series "developed" by Eyetech) since that gives Hyperion a chance to earn money off of a OS they want full control over...

Now as to whom is right... Well, that is debatable (and the guys over at aw.net is sure doing their best to do so. There are many 50-page threads about this, and each new court document creates another one) But this in the end (hopefully) be decided by the court that has been called in.

This may sound kind of stupid, but I'm curious to know...Is Hyperion funding this development alone? Isn't this venture risky money-wise for them? I'm just assuming that it has come at a substantial cost after all these years.
