Decision making...............
« on: March 06, 2008, 04:26:07 PM »
I dont have much time to play with my amigas anymore  :-(  due to work. In the next year i will have a kid, even less time to play. Do i put it all in storage for a computer history lesson for my kids or my own retirement. Or do i sell up to which i will probably regret. What do you think?

Get a new job that is not so demanding, or better yet just quit and have that wife of yours support you AND take care of the kid for you until he/she is old enough to operate a joystick sitting next to you!!!

Seriously, I would suggest NOT selling your Amiga(s), you will regret it later and the prices to replace what you have now will likely be more than your selling price.  Remove any batteries that might leak and pack your Amiga stuff away for a while.  After 10 years if you still don't have any time or desire to use them, then you can sell them.  An alternate to packing them away would be to find a good home that will use them, or introduce a young person that has an interest in old computers to the Amiga.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

amigas with SMD caps will die too, so better to have them replaced/removed before putting them away (A600, A1200, A4000, CD32)

Well a busy work schedule is one thing but it doesn't all have to end with a kid on the way. My son is seven months old now and I still get (limited!) time for a quick blast or game of Sensible Soccer. Who knows when he's older he may even be interested (at the moment he would attempt to EAT the mouse!  )

If you do store your gear make sure it's somewhere nice and dry  :-)

Sell out now and in 20 years, when you have time, everything will be cheap to buy back.

Ditto that.  Having a kid means less time for nerding, but the hours you get will be more intense.  My Commodore collection has more than doubled since junior appeared ;-)

Mmmm much more thought needed. I know if i did sell up i would try and sell it all in 1 hit. The postage is enough headache to put me off for now unless it was all picked up in a van. Bleh i hate getting old.

This must be the easiest question to answer: If you don't need the cash, DON'T SELL! You will regret it! I did and I still regret it.
Get a SAM, while you can! The new AMIGA is here!

Store everything away in a dry place. Keep everything you've collected over the months/years ... to sell would be a crime!

Wrong! The opposite will likely happen. Look at an as-is Altair.

We saw 80's vintage computing items bottom out in ~2001-2002 and value has been trending up ever since. In 20 years it will be a much more expensive hobby.
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!

I put my C-64 away and it blew in my face when I turned it on.  You should make decisions on how to store it because even my Amiga drive has a little rust on the end.

DO NOT SELL!!!

seriously, even if you think, heck this is old, do i have time, you will regret it.
I sold my Amigas at the time Commodore f*** it up and i regret it dearly.
Unless you do not like your Amiga anymore of course.
But if you like me and enjoy some of the games, demos etc... you want to keep it.
Even in the event to show it off to your kids at one point, which will prove that you are really a nerd. But hey, are we not all nerds in a way :)

Don't sell at all. I think you'll not able to collect everything you want again, later.
I'm a proud father of two, with less freetime than ever, but I reject to sell anything although I have absolutely no time. My son become 3 yrs old and since he was around 20 months old he wants to watch Superfrog every day, as he saw the intro once way back. 3-4 years are just flies, and soon kids becoming quite interested about all gadgets - can be anything better than an Amiga to start live with? On CDTV we're having some minutes recently with Fun School III, it's quite entertaining for him, so if the weather isn't good enough to play in the garden we can jump into the front of that.
Don't sell... don't waste anything you had, just because you afraid of lack of free time for it.
